Lancaster Stormers News Release
Scott Sobkowiak, who has battled injuries during the second half of the season, proved he has a clean bill of health Saturday night, twirling seven shutout innings in a 9-1 victory over the Road Warriors in front of 7,611 at Clipper Magazine Stadium.
The win reduced Lancaster's magic number for winning the second half title to one. Either a Lancaster win or an Atlantic City loss on Sunday will enable the Barnstormers to become the first Atlantic League team to win both halves since the 2002 Bridgeport Bluefish.
Sobkowiak (9-7) walked only one and struck out eight in recording his first win as a starter since a 6-1 win over Newark on July 25. Only once in his outing did the Road Warriors advance a runner to second base as Derek Barrows and Joe Nichols reached the right-hander for consecutive two-out singles in the fifth inning. Following that, Sobkowiak retired the final seven batters he faced, punctuating his night with a strikeout of Brian Jarosinski.
Lance Burkhart gave the Barnstormers the lead in the second, following a two-out infield single by Danny Gonzalez with a double off the fence in right.
Lancaster's offense sputtered until the fifth inning, when two walks and a single by Jose Ortiz loaded the bases with nobody out. Jutt Hileman chased starter Chris Eickhorst (1-15) with a lined single to left for a 2-0 edge. Two more runs scored when Danny Gonzalez swung and missed on a pitch in the dirt with two outs, and a belated throw to first game Hileman the opportunity to follow Eric Crozier home for a 4-0 lead.
Another run scored on a wild pitch in the sixth. Lance Burkhart stroked his second RBI double of the game in a four-run seventh. Ortiz also drove in a run with his third single of the night.
