Bears stopped by Surf, 13-4

NEWARK, NJ - The Newark Bears were defeated by the Atlantic City Surf 13-4 in game two of the three-game series Saturday evening at Bernie Robbins Stadium.

Entering the bottom of the fourth inning, with the score tied at one, Surf catcher John MacLeod delivered a two-run single to put Atlantic City ahead 3-1. The Bears came right back to tie the game at three in the top of the fifth, with a sacrifice fly by first baseman Victor Rodriguez, and a two-out RBI single by designated hitter Alexis Hernandez.

With the scored tied at three, the Surf added three runs in the bottom of the fifth, one run in the seventh, and six in the eighth, led by third baseman Raul Marval who finished the game 3-for-4 including his 17th home run of the season, a double, walk, and three RBI, and second baseman Demtrius Heath with a 4-for-6 performance including two runs scored and two RBI.

For the Bears Rodriguez ended the game 2-for-3 with his sixth home run of the season, a sacrifice fly, and two RBI. Center-fielder Anthony Sanders went 2-4 with a single, triple, walk, stolen base one run scored and one RBI, and third baseman Lipso Nava also had two hits for the Bears, a single and a double, and a walk.

Pat Daneker (5-10) took the loss allowing six runs, four earned, on ten hits in 4 1/3 innings pitched, while Ryan Shurman (7-6) earned the victory yielding three runs on nine hits in six innings pitched.

The Bears will play the final game of the 2006 season as they take on the Atlantic City Surf Sunday afternoon in the final game of the three-game series at Bernie Robbins Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 1:35 pm.
