Patriots Continue Winnning Streak

BRIDGEPORT , CT- The Somerset Patriots defeated the Bridgeport Bluefish 6-5 in ten innings in front of 4,568 fans at the Ballpark at Harbor Yard on Friday evening.

The Patriots snapped a 3-3 tie with three runs in the top of the tenth inning to make it a 6-3 game. Somerset loaded the bases on single to left by shortstop Kevin Nicholson, a walk to rightfielder Ryan Radmanovich and an intentional walk to designated hitter Tommy Rojas. First baseman Lou Lucca then hit a RBI infield single to third that scored Nicholson, and after a strikeout, second baseman George Sandel lined a two run single to center that plated both Radmanovich and Rojas.

The Bluefish scored two runs in the bottom of the tenth inning to cut the Patriots lead to 6-5. Third baseman Damian Rolls drew a one out walk, moved to second on a wild pitch and then went to third when shortstop Deivi Cruz struck out and reached on another wild pitch. Designated hitter P.J. Rose drove in Rolls with a sacrifice fly to left and first baseman Willis Otanez followed with a RBI double into the right field corner that plated Cruz.

Bridgeport struck first with an unearned run in the bottom of the first inning to take an early 1-0 lead when Cruz hit a two out single to left, moved to third on a single to right by Rose and later scored on a passed ball.

The Bluefish added a run in the bottom of the second inning to make it 2-0 when second baseman Steve Hine blooped a single into left, stole second and scored on a two out RBI single to center by rightfielder Angel Espada.

Somerset tied the game at 2-2 with two runs in the top of the fourth inning. Nicholson lined a single to right to lead off and came around to score on a one out RBI double down the right field line by leftfielder Larry Barnes. Then Lucca drew a two out walk and catcher Travis Anderson followed with a RBI single to center to plate Barnes.

Bridgeport answered with a run in the bottom of the fourth inning to take 3-2 lead. The Bluefish loaded the bases on a lead off walk to Otanez, a ground rule double to center by Hine and a walk by catcher Jaime Pogue. Espada then hit a RBI fielder's choice to second that plated Otanez.

The Patriots scored a run in the top of the sixth inning to again tie the game, this time at 3-3. Somerset loaded the bases when Barnes was hit by a pitch, Lucca singled to right and Anderson walked. Sandel then drove in Barnes with a RBI sacrifice fly to center field.

Patriots reliever Hector Almonte (5-1) picked up the win, throwing two scoreless innings while striking out one. Bluefish reliever Matt Anderson (1-1) suffered the loss giving up three runs on three hits while striking one and walking two in 1.2 innings of work. Patriots reliever Kane Davis pitched the tenth for his first save of the year.

With the win the Patriots improved to 31-30 in the second half and 64-60 on the 2006 season while the Bluefish dropped to 36-23 in the second half and 74-48 overall.
