Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release

BELOIT, Wis. - The Kernels fell to the Beloit Snappers, 5-4, on Friday night at Pohlman Field. Beloit's victory completed the series sweep over the Kernels, and the Snappers are now 2 games behind Cedar Rapids in the Midwest League Western Division.

Perhaps the Kernels' greatest offensive opportunities came in the 2nd and 3rd innings.

With the bases loaded and 1 out, J.D. Williams hit a grounder to shortstop Daniel Robertson, who didn't have a play so Adam Brett Walker scored. Further opportunity to score in the inning was squashed as Byron Buxton followed Williams by grounding into a double play.

The Kernels took the lead in the 3rd as they pushed across 2 runs. Walker connected for a 2-RBI single with the bases loaded to left field that scored Niko Goodrum and Jorge Polanco. Dalton Hicks was thrown out on the same sequence trying to advance to third base, though, and so was Walker as he attempted to go to second base.

Candido Pimentel extended the Kernels lead to 4-1 in the top of the 4th as the second baseman singled home Tyler Grimes, who tripled to lead off the inning.

Beloit entered the score sheet first on Friday night as catcher Bruce Maxwell doubled home Robertson in the bottom of the 1st inning. Robertson also doubled.

The Snappers were then held scoreless until the 4th when Ryan Mathews hit a 2-out, 2-run HR to narrow the deficit, 4-3. Kernels starter Tyler Duffey induced two ground outs to open the frame, but Chad Lewis extended the inning with a single followed by Mathews' blast.

The Snappers got another 2-run HR in the 5th as Matt Olson connected for one that just got over the wall in center field. Olson's long ball put Beloit in front, 5-4.

Duffey (3-2) exited after 5 innings, yielding 5 runs on 9 hits while walking 2 and striking out 4. Reliever Steve Gruver threw 2 innings to follow Duffey. Right-hander Tim Atherton followed Gruver for 1 inning and struck out 2.

Derek De Young (4-1) went 5 innings for the Beloit win while Vince Voiro pitched the final 4 innings for his 2nd save.
