Chiefs Lose 8-1 Friday

Peoria, IL- With a chance to sweep their former affiliation, the Peoria Chiefs allowed a pair of four-run innings on Friday night and lost to the Kane County Cougars 8-1. The loss snapped a three-game win streak and prevented the 23-22 Chiefs from moving to three games over .500 for the first time this season.

After Tyrell Jenkins tossed three scoreless innings, the Cougars scored four runs in the fourth frame to support Pierce Johnson. Dan Vogelbach reached on an error to start the inning and Jeimer Candelario singled to put runners on the corners with no outs. Rock Shoulders walked to load the bases and Yaniel Cabezas tripled to right field to clear the bases for a 3-0 Kane County lead. David Bote singled to center field to score Cabezas and put the Cougars on top 4-0.

The Chiefs responded with a run in the bottom of the inning. Ildemaro Vargas led off with a bunt single and Jacob Wilson singled as well. With one out, Michael Swinson walked to load the bases and Vargas scored on Carson Kelly's sacrifice fly to center field. But Johnson buckled down and got Nick Martini on a foul pop up to end the inning with two in scoring position.

The Chiefs threatened in the sixth but couldn't close the gap. Vargas led off with a double and moved to third on a groundout. With two outs Swinson drew a walk and stole second base. Johnson escaped the inning with a strikeout.

The Cougars scored four runs in the eighth inning to put the game out of reach. Pin-Chieh Chen led off with a single to center against Joe Scanio and Albert Almora singled to right. Vogelbach walked to load the bases and with one out, Shoulders walked to force in a run. Marco Hernandez singled to center for a 6-1 Cougars lead and two more scored on a wild pitch and a groundout.

Jenkins (3-3) took the loss pitching five innings and giving up four runs (three earned) on five hits while fanning four and walking four. Sam Tuivailala tossed one scoreless frame without allowing a hit and striking out one. Joe Scanio pitched three innings allowing four runs on three hits and three walks while striking out three.
