Beloit Sky Carp News Release
BELOIT, WI - Ryan Mathews' two-run homer in the fifth inning put the Beloit Snappers out in front and they held on against the Cedar Rapids Kernels, 5-4, at Pohlman Field in Midwest League action on Friday night in front of 853.
The victory completes a three game sweep by the Snappers, stretches their win streak to seven and puts their record at 28-18 as they continue holding on to a playoff spot. Cedar Rapids has dropped their last three to fall to 30-16.
"You kind of get amped up to play a team like this," said reliever Vince Voiro. "We've played these guys a lot this year so it is fun to go out there and compete."
An RBI double by Bruce Maxwell in the first put Beloit up 1-0, but it was soon erased by a J.D. Williams single that scored Adam Brett Walker (2-4, 2 RBI, run). Walker then gave his team the lead in the third with rope into right that went for a two-run single. Beloit's deficit grew to 4-1 one inning later, courtesy of a Tyler Grimes triple followed by a Candido Pimentel single.
Matt Olson was the first to cut into the lead by crushing a two-run homer over the batter's eye in dead center in the fourth inning, his sixth round-tripper of the year. Mathews (2-4, HR, RBI, run) provided his fourth homer of the year, good for two more runs, in the fifth off Tyler Duffey (3-2) and that put the Snappers up 5-4. The five runs they hung on Duffey was the most he'd allowed all season.
The Kernels couldn't find any offense from the fifth inning on, thanks to a pair of Beloit's arms. Starter Derek DeYoung (4-1) tossed a three-up, three-down fifth inning and, after walking the lead-off batter in the sixth, departed in favor of Vince Voiro. Voiro got out of the sixth without much trouble and continued stifling Cedar Rapids' lineup for the rest of the night. "I was really locating my fast ball well today," said Voiro, "keeping it down in the zone and trying to get weak contact." The right-hander would pitch the final four innings for his second save, giving up only two hits and two walks, to go with zero runs.
Next up for the Snappers is a trip to Kane County to play the Cougars in a four game slate. That series begins with a doubleheader on Saturday that will start at 3:30pm. RHP Dakota Bacus (4-1, 3.00 ERA) will match-up with RHP Jose Rosario (0-0, 2.25 ERA) in game one and RHP Austin House (0-3, 3.12 ERA) will face LHP Brian Smith (2-1, 2.42 ERA) in game two.
