Knoxville Smokies News Release
SEVIERVILLE, Tenn. - Runs were at a premium in Tuesday night's game between the Tennessee Smokies and West Tenn Diamond Jaxx. Unfortunately for the Smokies, Tuesday night's outcome mirrored that of Monday's, as they fell victim to a late West Tenn run and lost, 1-0, in front of 1,992 fans at Smokies Park.
Held to only four hits through the first eight innings, the West Tenn offense finally broke through in the ninth. Matt Mangini and Johan Limonta hit consecutive singles to lead off the frame. Teammate Leury Bonilla followed with a sacrifice bunt off Tennessee reliever Jeremy Papelbon (0-3) to advance Mangini and Limonta. With runners on second and third, and one out, Jeffrey Dominguez hit a bloop single to center. Brandon Guyer charged in from center but couldn't make the catch. Mangini would cross home for the game's only run.
With the Smokies offense struggling Tuesday night, it was pitching that kept them even with the Diamond Jaxx for the better part of the game. Starter Casey Coleman threw two-hit ball over six scoreless innings. He struck out two and walked three in lowering his ERA to an even 3.00.
Smokies reliever Todd Blackford followed with a scoreless inning of his own, getting out of a jam in the seventh. Papelbon followed with a scoreless eighth, but couldn't convert in the ninth.
The Smokies and Diamond Jaxx continue their series with a special 11:30 a.m. start time on Wednesday. Casey Lambert gets the ball for Tennessee, with doing the same for West Tenn. Grass berm seating is still available for tomorrow's game, which is Safe Kids & Health Awareness Day at Smokies Park. These tickets can be purchased Wednesday at the stadium ticket office.
