Jaxx top Smokies 4-3 in 13 innings Monday night

Jackson, Tenn. (May 8, 2009) - The Diamond Jaxx (11-17) take game one of the road series with the Tennessee Smokies (14-13) by the score of 4-3. Outstanding pitching down the stretch and timely hitting on Monday night was the key to breaking the five game losing streak.

Steven Hensley made his second start of the year for the Diamond Jaxx and pitched well. Hensley went six innings on Monday night giving up just three runs on eight hits. He struck out four and walked only one in the no decision.

The Jaxx got on the board in the top of the first thanks to a RBI double off the bat of Adam Moore scoring Ezequiel Carrera. The Smokies added a run in the bottom of the second tying the game at one. The Jaxx leftfielder tonight, Mel Stocker hit his first homer of the year breaking the tie and giving the Jaxx a 2-1 lead.

The Smokies took their first and only lead in the bottom of the fourth inning when Russ Canzler connected for an RBI base hit, then Brandon Guyer hit a sacrifice fly scoring James Adduci to give Tennessee a 3-2 lead.

The lead did not last long. Mel Stocker tripled to start the fifth inning and scored the game tying run on an RBI ground out by Adam Moore. Moore had two RBI's in the game giving him his first multi-RBI game of the year.

Anthony Varvaro (1-0) picks up the win for the Jaxx. He pitched 3.1 innings of relief for the Jaxx including getting out of a bases loaded, one out jam in the bottom of the tenth inning. Marwin Vega (S, 1) picked up the save. Jeremy Papelbon (0-2) suffers the loss for the Smokies. The Jaxx are now 2-1 in extra inning games this year.
