Knoxville Smokies News Release
BILOXI, MS- The Smokies got out to an early 4-0 lead, but a late Biloxi threat made the ballgame close. Tennessee prevailed to win by a final of 4-2 in game number two.
For the second consecutive night, the Smokies struck first with a run in the first inning. Owen Caissie reached base on a throwing error by first baseman Ernesto Martinez, scoring Nelson Maldonado to make it 1-0. In the next inning, Smokies shortstop Levi Jordan hit a sacrifice fly to right field, scoring another runner and taking a 2-0 advantage.
The Smokies made it a 4-0 lead in the fifth inning when Jordan laced a ball into left field, plating two more and making it 4-0 Smokies. In the bottom of the seventh inning, the Shuckers cut the lead in half with a two RBI single by Zavier Warren, making it 4-2.
The Shuckers threatened in the bottom of the eighth, but with the bases loaded and two outs, Smokies reliever Blake Whitney retired the batter on three pitches to end the threat. Whitney would pick up a four out save to end the ballgame and win it 4-2.
Tennessee left a small village on base tonight, leaving 13 on base and going 1-for-13 with runners in scoring position. Tennessee takes a 2-0 series lead with the victory, and improves to 60-43 on the season. The Smokies and the Shuckers battle again tomorrow with first pitch starting at 7:35 ET.
