Knoxville Smokies News Release
SEVIERVILLE - The Smokies and Generals began their contest under blue skies on Wednesday night, but the storms rolled over Smokies Stadium in the fifth inning forcing the game to be called. The Generals took the five-inning victory over the Smokies, 4-3.
LF Mark Zagunis picked up three RBI for the Smokies including a two-run home run in the third inning.
While RHP Duane Underwood, Jr. (5.0 IP, 7 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 7 SO, 2 BB, HR) retired the Generals in order to open the contest, the Generals jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the second frame. Underwood, Jr. struck out the first two Jackson hitters he faced, but then 2B Tim Lopes (1-3, SO) started the rally with a single to right. C Marcus Littlewood (1-2, SO) followed that up with a single of his own before DH Dan Paolini (1-2, RBI) hit a single of his own up the middle to score Lopes to make it a 1-0 Jackson advantage.
Underwood, Jr. was handed the loss for his efforts in the shortened contest while RHP Brett Ash (5.0 IP, 9 H, 3 R, 3 ER, HR) grabbed the win for Jackson.
The Generals offense continued clicking in the third as they were able to extend their lead.
CF Ian Miller (2-3, R, SO) led off the frame with a base knock to right and proceeded to swipe second with SS Benji Gonzalez (0-3, SO) at the dish. Gonzalez advanced Miller to third on a groundout before RF Guillermo Heredia (1-2, RBI, R, BB) hit a blooper to right for an RBI double. 1B D.J. Peterson (1-3, HR, R, SO) stepped to the dish and sent a shot over the right field wall handing the Generals a 4-0 edge over the Smokies.
The Smokies answered and stopped the bleeding in the home half of the third with a home run of their own. After 2B Chesny Young (2-3, R) reached on a two out single, Zagunis (3-3, HR, 3 RBI, R) stepped to the plate and sent a high fly ball to the gap in right field that creeped over the wall cutting the Jackson lead in half, 4-2.
Tennessee managed to chip into the Generals' lead in the fifth as well. SS Carlos Penalver (1-2, R) hit a single to right that was followed by a Young two out base knock putting runners on the corners for the Smokies. Zagunis picked up his third RBI of the contest with a single up the middle that bounced into center field after hitting the second base bag scoring Penalver making it a 4-3 contest before the game was called.
