JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - First baseman Chris Curley hit for the cycle - believed to be the first by a Jacksonville Sun at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville - including a go-ahead three-run home run to help his team to its third straight win with a 7-4 victory over the Montgomery Biscuits in front of 1,565 at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville Wednesday night.
Curley became the first Sun to hit for the cycle since Kyle Skipworth on May 26, 2012, at Chattanooga. Curley's sixth-inning home run and eighth-inning triple to complete the feat were each his first with the Suns (25-26).
Curley had the Suns' first hit Wednesday with a third-inning leadoff double to right-center field against Biscuits right-hander Chih-Wei Hu, who retired three straight batters with runners at first and third bases to keep the game scoreless. With Montgomery (24-27) holding a 2-0 lead in the fifth inning, Curley hit a leadoff single to right field against Hu. Designated hitter Francisco Arcia singled, and after catcher Cam Maron's sacrifice, center fielder Yefri Perez hit an RBI single. Curley scored, but Arcia was thrown out at home plate to keep a 2-1 Biscuits lead.
In the sixth inning, Biscuits right-hander Jared Mortensen walked Suns third baseman Brian Anderson with one out, and second baseman Peter Mooney doubled down the third-base line, before Curley homered toward the right-field-corner for a 4-2 Jacksonville lead. Right fielder Moises Sierra added an estimated 448-foot, seventh-inning home run to center field to make it 5-2. Curley's eighth-inning RBI triple to left-center field scored Mooney, and Maron hit an RBI double to make it 7-2. Suns right-hander Sean Donatello allowed two ninth-inning runs before completing a two-inning save - his fourth this season - to earn the win for right-hander Tyler Bremer (4-1), who pitched a season-high three scoreless innings.
UP NEXT: The Suns and Biscuits play a doubleheader of seven-inning games at 5:05 p.m. Thursday, when Suns right-hander Austin Brice (3-3) is scheduled to face Biscuits right-hander Hunter Wood in Game 1. Suns left-hander Matt Tomshaw will make his 2016 Suns debut against Biscuits right-hander Jake Faria in Game 2. Gates open at 4:30 p.m. on Maverick's Live Thirsty Thursday fueled by Budweiser, when fans can purchase $1 12-oz. and $2 24-oz. beers adjacent to the new Tiki Terrace, on the left-field berm, at the right field bleachers. The night is also presented by 95.1 WAPE and X102.9. "Swipe Right" Night will feature Tinder-themed and dating-themed contests, advice and more. Regular individual tickets for Wednesday may be exchanged at the box office for a ticket of equal or lesser value to Thursday's doubleheader.
