JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A seven-run eighth inning downed the Suns in a 12-4 loss to the Tennessee Smokies on Sunday in front of 2,631 fans at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville.

Leading 5-4, the Smokies scored all seven runs with two outs off reliever Steve Langone. Papo Bolivar and Bucky Jacobsen had back-to-back two-run singles and Yadier Molina had a bases-clearing triple off Langone, who had previously gone 21-2/3 innings without allowing an earned run.

The Suns (25-30) opened the scoring when Victor Diaz drove in Jason Repko on a groundout in the first inning. Jacksonville scored again on B.J. Waszgis' two-out single with the bases loaded, giving them a 2-0 lead. But the Suns stranded the bases loaded.

They would not score again until the fifth, when, trailing 3-2, Nick Alvarez blasted the first pitch from Smokies starter Josh Pearce down the left field line for a two-run double, giving the Suns a 4-3 lead. Pearce (2-0) scattered 10 hits and pitched six innings in the victory.

Alfredo Gonzalez delivered the longest outing of his career, stretching into the seventh inning. But with one out, Gonzalez (1-1) allowed a two-run home run to Caonabo Cosme, sinking the Suns to a 5-4 deficit. Gonzalez gave up 12 hits over 6-2/3 innings.

Diaz had three hits to lead the Suns, who have lost six of their last seven games. Molina had four RBI to lead Tennessee (32-24).

Right-hander Joel Hanrahan (5-2, 2.44 ERA) is scheduled to face Tennessee righty Rhett Parrott (2-5, 4.18) at 7:05 p.m. Monday at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville.
