Birmingham Barons News Release

BIRMINGHAM, AL – The Birmingham Barons dropped the first game of the four-game series to the West Tenn Diamond Jaxx by the score of 4-3 in front of 7,296 fans on Saturday evening at the Hoover Met. The loss coupled with a Huntsville 5-4, extra-inning win over Mobile puts the Barons two games back in the Western Division race.

D-Jaxx starter John Webb (1-6) picked up his first win of the season after giving up three runs over seven innings. Webb came into the game tied for the lead in the Southern League in loses but threw a solid game to finally pick up a win.

The Barons took the early lead with a RBI groundout by Chris Saunders in the second but West Tenn bounced back with a run of their own in the fourth on a bases loaded walk by Ulacia. Following the walk, Ulacia punched the mound in frustration and had to come out the game with a bruised right hand and will be revaluated tomorrow.

The D-Jaxx took the lead for good off reliever Matt Smith (1-1) in the sixth on an RBI double by Casey Kopitzke and a two-run bomb by Jon Hamilton. Birmingham would scratch their way back into the game with a lone run in the sixth and seventh innings but fell a run short as David Cash closed the game out by striking out the side to register his fifth save.

Tomorrow afternoon, the Barons look to even the series as they send out RHP Tetsu Yofu (3-2, 2.68) to face RHP Sergio Mitre (3-4, 4.47). Game time is 2:00 and all the action can be heard on 101.1 FM "The Source" with Curt Bloom on the play-by-play.
