Knoxville Smokies News Release
Jacksonville, Fla. - Yadier Molina's bases loaded triple highlighted a seven run eighth inning as Tennessee (32-24) topped Jacksonville (25-30) 12-4 Sunday night. The Smokies pounded out 17 hits and scored the game's final 9 runs. With their 12-4 win Sunday night the Smokies are one game behind Carolina with 14 games remaining in the season's first half.
Trailing 4-3 in the seventh, Caonabo Cosme followed a Skip Schumaker single with a two-run home run against Alfredo Gonzalez (1-1) to give the Smokies a 5-4 lead.
Tennessee erupted against reliever Steve Langone in the eighth inning to put the game out of reach. Papo Bolivar singled home Jeremy Dodson with the bases loaded for the first run. Bucky Jacobsen followed with a two-run double. After a single by Corey Erickson, his third hit of the night, Josh Axelson reached on an error by Langone to load the bases for Molina. Center fielder Jason Repko made a diving attempt at Molina's sinking line drive, but the ball skidded under his glove and rolled to the wall for the Tennessee catcher's first triple of the season. The seven runs tied a Smokies season high for runs in an inning.
Josh Pearce (2-0) allowed four runs over six innings to pick up his second win of the season.
The third game of the series will pit Rhett Parrott (2-4, 4.18) against Joel Hanrahan (5-2, 2.44) Monday night at 7:05.
