St. Lucie Mets News Release
DAYTONA, Fla. (June 8, 2015) - Dominic Smith and Stefan Sabol hit two-run home runs to propel the St. Lucie Mets past the Daytona Tortugas 6-4 on Monday at Jackie Robinson Ballpark.
Mets starter Rob Whalen gave up three runs in the first inning but rebounded to keep the Tortugas off the board over the next five.
The Mets offense went to work against Jackson Stephens in the second. Matt Oberste ripped a leadoff double and Smith followed with an opposite field homer that just stayed fair and cleared the wall. It was the second home run of the season for Smith.
Amed Rosario singled on the next pitch. That brought up Sabol, who crushed a titanic home run to left field to the put the Mets up 4-3. It was Sabol's first long ball with the Mets in his nine games with the team. He has hit in seven straight games.
After the first inning Whalen allowed just two hits and one walk. He retired the last eight he faced and capped his night with back-to-back strikeouts in the sixth. Whalen improved to 3-3. He tossed six innings and gave up three runs and five hits while striking out four.
The Mets scored their final two runs in the seventh. Sabol reached on a leadoff error and was sacrificed up to second. Phil Evans then laced an RBI triple to right-center to make it 5-3. Evans later scored on a wild pitch.
Robby Coles allowed one unearned run in the bottom of the seventh. Taylor Sparks scored on a double play ball to make it 6-4.
Akeel Morris closed out the game by striking out the side in the ninth. Morris, named to the FSL South Division All Star Team earlier in the day, recorded his 11th save in 11 chances.
Smith, Sabol and Evans had two-hit games for the Mets.
The Mets (29-28) and Tortugas (33-24) continue their series on Tuesday. First pitch at Jackie Robinson Ballpark is at 7:05 p.m. The game can be heard on www.stluciemets.com.
