Palm Beach Cardinals News Release

JUPITER, Fla. - The Palm Beach Cardinals (26 - 31) dropped to five games below .500 for the third time this season after being defeated by the Brevard County Manatees, 7 - 2. The Cardinals were able to score first in the game, plating two in the bottom of the fourth. The Manatees fed off of Palm Beach's momentum by scoring seven over the next two innings. Palm Beach's starting pitcher, Will Anderson, suffered the loss, his third of the season.

Through three complete innings, both pitchers allowed two hits, but was able to avoid any runs being scored. Brevard couldn't get a runner beyond first, and the Cardinals stranded runners at first and second in the second, as well as a runner at third the next inning.

In the bottom of the fourth, newcomer, David Washington, led off the inning with a double down the left field line. He moved to third on Carson Kelly's groundout, and advanced home on Casey Turgeon's two RBI single. Prior to Turgeon's single to right field, Juan Herrera was hit by a pitch and stole second to put him in scoring position for Turgeon. With Turgeon on second, Robelys Reyes struck out to end the inning.

The Cardinals lead didn't last long, as the Manatees scored four the next half inning. Brevard County's Garrett Cooper, led off with a single but was out on a fielder's choice the next play. With runners on first and second with one out, Christopher McFarland found the gap in left field to plate the Manatees first run. The next batter, Taylor Brennan, tied the game at two after doubling to the same spot in left field. For Brevard's third hit in a row, Clint Coulter doubled, getting the two runners on base home, making the score 4 - 2.

The next inning, the Manatees continued their hot streak, scoring three runs on four hits. After giving up a double and a single, Anderson was replaced on the mound by Palm Beach's newest pitcher, Silfredo Garcia. In Garcia's 2015 debut with Palm Beach, he pitched two complete innings, giving up one run on two hits and struck out two.

To make sure Brevard wouldn't score again, Tyler Melling was called to the mound to complete the last two innings of the game. Melling faced one more than the minimum and struck out one during his outing.

The Cardinals will continue their series against the Brevard Manatees with game two on Tuesday, June 9, with the first pitch scheduled for 6:35 p.m. To purchase tickets, please call (561) 630-1828 or visit RogerDeanStadium.com.
