Clearwater Threshers News Release
CLEARWATER, Fla. - David Whitehead dominated the Marauders through six innings on Monday, and Clearwater jumped out to a large lead it would not relinquish in earning a 6-0 victory over Bradenton in the series opener at Bright House Field.
In his first start since May 28, Whitehead held the Florida State League's top offense to just four hits and a walk in six shutout frames. Whitehead (3-2) faced just three over the minimum, and picked up six strikeouts in the win.
Dylan Cozens gave the Threshers an extra boost in the bottom of the seventh, launching a homer out to the berm in right-center to make it 6-0. The longball was Cozens' third of the season.
Clearwater (28-29) had wasted no time busting through offensively on Monday. After suffering back-to-back shutouts in the final two games of the series at Tampa, the Threshers connected for seven consecutive hits on their way to plating five runs in the home half of the first.
Andrew Pullin got it started by knocking a triple to the track in right-center, and Andrew Knapp brought him in with a single that caromed off the pitcher Cody Dickson (4-5). Cozens pulled a hard grounder through the right side, and Harold Martinez pushed a roller through to the opposite field in right to score Knapp and make it 2-0.
With two on and one out, Aaron Brown pulled a 1-0 pitch down the first base line that brought both Cozens and Martinez home and resulted in the second triple of the inning, and Chace Numata followed with a double to center to make it 5-0.
Whitehead and the pitching staff took the reins from there.
The Marauders (26-31) did not get a man past second base until the seventh inning, when JaCoby Jones reached on a fielder's choice, stole second, and advanced to third on an error by Numata on the throw. Edubray Ramos, who took over for Whitehead to start the seventh, settled down in to induce a strike out and fly out to end the inning.
Ramos rebounded from a loss on Thursday to toss two scoreless innings, and Jesen Therrien set down all three men he faced to finish it off in the ninth.
With Daytona losing to St. Lucie on Monday, the Threshers are now five games back of first place with 13 contests remaining in the first half.
Clearwater will be back home for Dollar Tuesday presented by Regions Bank, as the Threshers host Bradenton at 7 p.m. FSL All-Star Mark Leiter, Jr. (3-1) gets the ball for Clearwater against the Marauders Frank Duncan (4-2). The call can be heard live on the Threshers Broadcast Network starting at 6:45 p.m.
