Calgary Stampeders News Release

The Calgary Stampeders are pleased to announce that halfback Brandon Smith has been named the Canadian Football League's defensive player of the week for Week 10.

Smith made his first two career interceptions during the Stamps' 52-5 Labour Day Classic victory over the Edmonton Eskimos at McMahon Stadium on Monday and returned the first of the two picks 58 yards for a touchdown. Smith also made one defensive tackle and was part of a unit that limited the Eskimos to a 40 per cent pass-completion rate, five rushing yards and 152 yards of net offence. For the season, the third-year Stampeder ranks sixth on the team and second among defensive backs with 23 tackles.

Stamps receiver Romby Bryant was the runner-up for the offensive player of the week honours in Week 10 while running back Jon Cornish was runner-up for Canadian player of the week.

This marks the fifth time a Stampeder has been recognized in the CFL's weekly awards and the first time a member of Calgary's league-leading defence has been honoured. Previous Calgary winners are Jon Cornish, who was named top Canadian in Week 4 and Week 9, Bryant, who was top offensive player in Week 4, and Ken-Yon Rambo, who received the offensive-player-of the-week nod in Week 9.

The next home game for the Stamps is on Saturday, Sept. 25 against the BC Lions. It's the annual PinkPower game in support of the Canadian Cancer Society and kickoff is at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are still available by contacting the Stampeders' Ticket Office (403-289-0258 or toll free at 1-800-667-3267), Ticketmaster (403-777-0000 or online at Ticketmaster.ca) or by visiting any local Safeway or Sport Chek location.
