New Hampshire Fisher Cats News Release
Binghamton, NY- Eric Nielsen went 2-for-4 with two singles, a walk and two runs scored, and David Smith added an RBI single and a walk, but the Binghamton Mets handed the New Hampshire Fisher Cats their sixth straight loss, 4-2, before a crowd of 3,458 Wednesday night at NYSEG Stadium.
Binghamton (69-62) raced out to the early lead in the bottom of the second inning by stringing together four straight two-out hits against losing pitcher Brandon Magee. Salvador Paniagua (1-for-4, R) and Jose Coronado (1-for-4, R) singled and scored on a two-run double to deep center by Fernando Martinez (3-for-4, 2B, RBI, R, SB, BB) for a 2-0 lead. New York Mets second baseman Luis Castillo (1-for-4, BB, RBI), in his fifth and final rehabilitation appearance with the B-Mets, lined a single to center, bringing home Martinez to make it 3-0.
New Hampshire (55-76) struck back in the top of the fourth inning when Smith (1-for-3, BB, RBI) laced a two-out, bases-loaded RBI single to right off Dylan Owen, scoring Nielsen (2-for-4, BB, 2 R) to trim Binghamton's lead to 3-1.
The Mets made it 4-1 in the bottom of the fifth inning when Castillo walked and later scored on a Caleb Stewart (2-for-3, RBI, HBP) single.
That made a winner of Owen (1-0), who yielded one run on six hits over six innings in his Double-A debut. The right-hander fanned five and walked two.
Magee (6-13) was saddled with his Eastern League-leading 13th loss by yielding four runs on nine hits in 6.2 innings. He struck out two, walked three and a hit a batter in tying a franchise record for losses in a season (Ismael Ramirez-2005).
The Fisher Cats added a run on a bases-loaded, fielder's choice ground out by Andrew Pinckney (1-for-4, RBI) in the eighth inning against reliever Eric Brown, scoring Nielsen to make it 4-2.
But Casey Hoorelbeke came out of the bullpen to get two, bases-loaded fielder's choice ground outs from Erik Kratz (0-for-4) and Jacob Butler (1-for-4) in the eighth inning and a game-ending double-play grounder from J.P. Arencibia (0-for-3, 2 BB) in the ninth inning to notch his first save.
The Fisher Cats and Mets wrap up their three-game series at NYSEG Stadium on Thursday night at 7:05pm when right-hander Robert Ray (6-5, 3.28) pitches for New Hampshire against Binghamton left-hander Mike Antonini (0-1, 3.60). Radio coverage begins at 6:45pm on the WGIR Fisher Cats Radio Network with Mike Murphy.
