August 20, 2008 - Eastern League (EL1)
Binghamton Rumble Ponies News Release

The New York Mets announced today that outfielder Ryan Church has joined the Binghamton Mets for a Major League rehab assignment. He is expected to start for Binghamton in tonight's 7:05 contest against the New Hampshire Fisher Cats at NYSEG Stadium.

Church hasn't played for the Mets since July 5th and he's been on the Disabled List since July 7th with a post-concussion syndrome. The lefthanded-hitting outfielder was batting .307 with 10 homers and 36 RBIs in 57 games when he went down. Church comes to Binghamton after playing the previous two days for AAA New Orleans, where he was 1 for 5 with a double and an RBI. Prior to that, Church started two games with the Rookie GCL Mets, going 1 for 6 with an RBI.

Church joined the NY Mets this season after spending his first three Major League seasons with Montreal and Washington. Originally a 14th-round selection of Cleveland in the 2000 Draft, the 29-year-old previously played in the Eastern League for Akron and Harrisburg.

Church becomes the fifth Major Leaguer to rehab with the B-Mets this season. Second baseman Luis Castillo, who has played in four games with Binghamton since joining the team Friday, is also expected to be in the lineup tonight. Pitcher Billy Wagner tossed a scoreless inning of relief at NYSEG Stadium last Thursday. Pitcher Orlando Hernandez started at NYSEG Stadium on July 17th. Outfielder Moises Alou rehabbed with Binghamton in Connecticut July 8th and 9th.

Tonight, the Binghamton Mets continue their final homestand of the season with the second of three against the New Hampshire Fisher Cats at 7:05. The homestand concludes with three night games against the Bowie Baysox over the weekend.
