Defenders Announce 2009 Home Schedule

NORWICH, CT- The 2008 Eastern League regular season is winding down as the Defenders close out their final homestand of the year this week through Sunday, August 24th. While players and staff are focused on securing a playoff berth for this season, it is never too early prepare for next season as the Defenders 2009 Home Schedule has arrived, the team announced today.

The 2009 season will mark the club's 15th in Norwich and ironically the Defenders kick-off the Opening Day festivities vs. the Trenton Thunder, AA Affiliate of the NY Yankees on Thursday, April 16. The date marks the latest date of a home opener in the club's history, a fact that is welcomed by the club's staff.

"We are delighted with the fact that we will open in mid-April and will host a limited amount of games (7 in total), "said Defenders General Manager Charlie Dowd.

The schedule will kick into high gear as May rolls around and the family affordable fun will last well into early September. The Defenders will have three homestands in May, June, July and August. New for 2009, the Defenders will finish up the regular season at home (first time since 2006) with a 7 game homestand starting on Labor Day, September 7.

"We welcome September dates, especially at the expense of April dates. The weather is far more predictable and it makes it a whole lot easier to enjoy Eastern League baseball in pleasant weather," said Dowd.

Perennial favorites Binghamton, Trenton and Portland (Mets, Yankees and Red Sox affiliates) as well as inter-state rival New Britain Rock Cats (Twins) and fellow North Division rival New Hampshire (Blue Jays) comprise a bulk of the schedule.

With 34 weekend home dates, the Defenders staff is already working on a promotional schedule filled with giveaways, entertainment acts and much more that are the hallmark of Defenders Baseball.
