Sleepy Bats and Errors Doom Hens in 3-1 Morning Loss to Yankees

The early start got the best of the Mud Hens as three errors proved costly in a 3-1 loss to the Yankees on Tuesday morning.

The Hens got off to an early 1-0 lead in the second thanks to some smart baserunning by Matt Young. Omir Santos singled and then forced himself into a pickle after trying to steal second, which allowed the speedy Young on third to break for home and beat out the throw.

Andy Oliver threw another good start for Toledo surrendering two runs over 5.2 innings while allowing three hits and striking out nine. Oliver was on the hook for his third straight win before the Yankees scored three in the sixth inning on a string of singles and two throwing errors by Jeff Frazier to make it 3-1.

The Hens' bats failed to wake up for the early start compiling five hits. Justin Henry continued to swing a hot bat though, going 1-2 to extend his average to .439 in the month of May. Matt Young went 2-3 and scored the lone Toledo run.

Brooks Brown finished the game for Toledo, throwing three innings of scoreless relief.

The Hens host the Yankees tomorrow at 6:30 p.m. for the third game of their four game series. Fu-Te Ni is set to start for the Hens after taking a loss in his last appearance despite a quality start allowing three runs over six innings and striking out four.

Game Notes

The game was the first of three special 10:30 a.m. School Celebration Days for the Hens. The next one is Monday, May 21.

Both teams combined for six errors for the second game in a row.

Toledo dropped to 10-2 when scoring first at Fifth Third Field this season.
