Gwinnett Stripers News Release
BUFFALO, NY -The Buffalo Bisons pounded out 14 runs on 17 hits to rout the Gwinnett Braves 14-7 in game two of the four-game series Wednesday night at Coca-Cola Field in Buffalo, New York.
The Bisons touched up G-Braves' starting pitcher Jair Jurrjens for four runs in the bottom of the first and never trailed in the game. After recording the first two batters in that half inning, Jurrjens gave up an infield single to Vinnie Rottino and then walked Valentino Pasccucci. Matt Tuiasosopo then hit a drive that was misplayed and dropped by G-Braves right-fielder Felix Pie. Tuiasosopo would circle the bases on the play that was ruled an inside-the-park home run. Jurrjens never recovered. He gave up a solo homer to the next batter, Brad Emaus to make it 4-0 after one.
Gwinnett cut into the lead with a run in the top of the third, making it 4-1. Ernesto Mejia singled in Drew Sutton for the G-Braves' first run. Sutton had drawn a two-out walk off of Buffalo starter Garrett Olson and moved to third on a double by Stefan Gartrell.
However, the Bisons tallied four more in the bottom of the third off of Jurrjens to bolt out to an 8-1 lead.
After both teams failed to score in the fourth, the G-Braves cut into the seven-run deficit in the top of the fifth. Luis Durango walked and moved to second on a single to left by Pie. Sutton walked to load the bases with no one out. Mejia reached on a force play scoring Durango from second to make it 8-2 and Joey Terdoslavich doubled home Pie from third to cut the Bisons' lead to 8-3.
It did not take Buffalo long to get those runs back with three in the bottom of the inning to make it 11-3. That would be the last inning for Jurrjens as he would end up with only 4.2 innings pitched on the night. The Bisons also added a run off G-Braves' reliever Jason Rice in the bottom of the sixth to extend their lead to 11-3.
But in the top of the seventh, Gartrell, who earlier had hit two doubles, blasted a two run homer over the left field wall to cut the Bisons lead to 11-5. It was Gartrell's second homer in as many nights and team-leading eighth of the season.
The Bisons added an unearned run in the bottom of the seventh off of reliever Adam Russell and another in the bottom of the eighth off of left-hander Dusty Hughes. The game moved to the ninth inning with Buffalo in command by a 14-5 score.
The G-Braves did not go quietly in the ninth. A triple by Sutton, double by Mejia and single by Terdoslavich accounted for two runs off of former Atlanta pitcher and Georgia native Chuck James. However, the two runs in the ninth would be the last scored by Gwinnett on the night.
Jurrjens (L, 2-1) gave up 12 hits and 11 runs in his 4.2 innings of work. Ten of the 11 runs were earned. He walked two and struck out three. Rice worked 1.1 innings with two hits, one earned run, one walk and one strikeout. Russell pitched one inning with one hit and one unearned run. Hughes finished the game for Gwinnett with two hits and one earned run in one inning of work.
Olson (W, 1-3) picked up the win for the Bisons with five innings of work. He gave up six hits, three earned runs, four walks and struck out six. Jack Egbert pitched two innings, giving up four hits and two earned runs. James, in his first game back off the DL, worked 1.1 innings with three hits, two earned runs and two strikeouts. Justin Hampson closed out the game, working 0.2 inning with two hits.
Gwinnett finished with a season-high 15 hits despite the loss. Gartrell (3-for-5, 2 doubles, HR, 2 RBI) and Mejia (3-for-5, double, 3 RBI) each had three-hit nights while Sutton (2-for-3, triple, 3 runs scored) and Terdoslavich (2-for-4, double, 2 RBI) added multi-hit efforts. Durango finished 1-for-4 to extend his hitting streak to 11-straight games.
Tuiasosopo had the big game for the Bisons, going 3-for-5 with four RBI. Omar Quintanilla added three RBI on 2-for-3 hitting. Rottino went 2-for-4 with two runs scored, extending his hitting streak to 19 games for the Bisons.
The G-Braves (25-15) and Bisons (23-17) continue the series with game three of the four-game set on Thursday night in Buffalo. Right-hander Julio Teheran (3-1, 2.48) will get the start for the G-Braves, while Buffalo counters with right-hander Chris Schwinden (2-2, 2.45). Listen to the broadcast on WDUN AM 550 in Gainesville, Georgia with Tony Schiavone calling the play by play.
