Johnstown Chiefs News Release

Johnstown, PA - "Slap Shots and Snapshots" - a dynamic new hard-back book from The Tribune-Democrat and Johnstown Magazine - is now available to hockey fans across the region. The book is currently available at the Tribune - Democrats office in Johnstown and will on display at the Chiefs home games beginning November 21.

This book chronicles Johnstown's storied pro hockey history - from the Blue Birds of the 1940s through the Jets, Red Wings and Chiefs of today. "Slap Shots and Snapshots" is packed with 336 pages of the best moments and greatest players to grace the ice at the historic Cambria County War Memorial Arena. The release of the book coincides with the 20th anniversary season of both the Johnstown Chiefs and the ECHL.

" 'Slap Shots and Snapshots' spotlights a city and a sport that have made the icy, cold western Pennsylvania winters just a bit warmer over the years," said Mike Mastovich, award-winning hockey writer at The Tribune-Democrat and lead writer for this book.

"Slap Shots and Snapshots" is the most complete collection of stories, photographs and statistics related to Johnstown's rich hockey tradition. And this book includes a tribute to that phenomenal hockey movie, "Slap Shot," filmed in Johnstown and based on the 1975 North American Hockey League champion Johnstown Jets. On December 22, the Hanson Brothers will be at the Chiefs game versus Cincinnati signing copies of the book.

"We were like archaeologists, piecing together the accurate historical record, while painstakingly uncovering the factual information," said Dana Heinze, Johnstown native and Pittsburgh Penguins equipment manager, on the research that led to this book.

The Chiefs are back in action Friday night when they take on the Dayton Bombers will be the first annual "BIC Wite-Out Nite." The first 3,000 people will receive a BIC Wite-Out/Chiefs t shirt courtesy of BIC Corporation. Fans are encouraged to wear the t shirts during the game. Saturday November 17 is UPMC Health Plan rally towel night. The first 1,000 fans will receive a Chiefs rally towel.
