Victoria Salmon Kings News Release

The Victoria Salmon Kings returned to the Save-On-Foods memorial Centre tonight after taking two out of three from Grizzlies on a trip to Utah. The Stockton Thunder traveled north to take on the Kings for the first time in the 2007-08 season.

The first period saw both teams feeling each other out through the first few minutes, but at around the halfway mark Victoria started the scoring. Milan Gajic fired a rocket past Thunder goaltender Glenn Fisher for the 1-0 lead. Marc-Andre Bernier tickled the twine for his first of the season when he made a beautiful move coming down the left side of the ice and went from the backhand to the forehand to beat Fisher for a 2-0 Salmon Kings lead. Bernier would notch his second of the game a few minutes later when he roofed a shot past Fisher for a 3-0 lead with 21 seconds remaining in the first period. Stockton would make a statement 12 seconds later when they put a puck past Julien Ellis to cut the lead to 3-1.

Stockton came out with a new goaltender, Cam Ellsworth, in the second period. An early burst of energy resulted in chances, but Ellis was able to keep the door closed. Derek Krestanovich counted his first of the season at the 11:09 mark of the second period as he hustled on a Ryan Wade shot that had trickled through Ellsworth's legs and slapped it in the net for a 4-1 lead. A few minutes later Chris St. Jacques beat Ellsworth after Bernier had hit the post and a bouncing puck deflected off of the former Thunder forward for his first of the season.

The third period brought with it a flurry of activity. Stockton started it by scoring a shorthanded marker 23 seconds in, but Victoria responded when Ash Goldie scored a power play goal 16 seconds later. Stockton scored less than three minutes later to make the score 6-3. Kiel McLeod scored on a breakaway at the 8:15 mark of the period. Stockton added one more goal to make it a 7-4 game, but they would get no closer.

Stockton outshot Victoria 44-29. Victoria went 1/2=50% with the man advantage and Stockton went 1/4=25%. These two teams will meet up again on Friday night for the second game of the three game set. Call 220-7889 for tickets.
