Checkers Down Inferno In Shootout
November 15, 2007 - ECHL (ECHL)
Charlotte Checkers News Release
Charlotte, N.C. - The Checkers defeated their division rivals, the Columbia Inferno in a shootout tonight.
In the first period, Mac Faulkner accepted a great pass from Tyler Doig and wristed the puck behind Checkers goaltender, Miika Wiikman at 14:11 putting the Inferno up, 1-0. Despite several power play opportunities in the initial stanza, the Checkers couldn't get on the board.
In the middle frame, while the Checkers were on the man-advantage, Patrick Bordeleau sent a rink-wide pass to Lee Falardeau who bolted down ice and scored on a great shot at 2:35, tying the contest at 1-1. Later, Chris Capraro made good on his opportunity as he sped down the right wing and roofed a shot over the glove of Inferno netminder, Jeff Jakaitis putting Charlotte up 2-1 at 8:42.
As the third period progressed, neither team was able to beat the opposition netminders. It wasn't until an odd bounce off an Inferno dump-in caught Wiikman off guard and Faulkner was able to take advantage of the out of position goalie. Faulkner scored his second of the game and tied the contest at 2-2. Neither team could end the contest in overtime so the game headed to a shootout.
In the shootout, both Chris Capraro and Nathan Gillies would strike and only the Inferno's Jeff Miles could tally a goal giving the Checkers a 3-2 victory and the two points.
Notes: Wiikman stopped 32 of 34 shots while Jakaitis turned aside 27 of 29...Only the Checkers scored a power play goal on one of their eight tries. The Inferno were unsuccessful on six attempts...Charlotte defenseman, Jared Nightingale ended the game with a pair of assists...
The Checkers are in their 15th season of play as a member of the ECHL. Their next home game takes place on Nov. 16 against the Florida Everblades. In the team's 14-year history, the Checkers have made the playoffs 10 times including three consecutive playoff appearances to date. The Checkers will enter their third season of play at St. Lawrence Homes Home Ice at Charlotte Bobcats Arena this fall. Season tickets are on sale now with full-season packages starting at just $399.
