AVON, Ohio - The Joliet Slammers hit a pair of homeruns and scored all three of their runs in the second inning of Wednesday night's contest, as they defeated the Lake Erie Crushers at All Pro Freight Stadium, 3-1.

The Crushers (4-7) were silenced offensively, and remain winless in five home games this season, while the Slammers (6-6) have now won five out of their last six contests.

The contest was dominated by a pair of great pitching performances. Joliet Starting pitcher Steven Maxwell (2-1) struck out seven batters over seven innings, and took complete control of the contest.

Eric Gonzalez-Diaz (0-3) hit a speed bump in the second inning, where he surrendered a pair of homeruns, but looked great in every other inning. Gonzalez-Diaz issued a leadoff walk to Erik Lis, and Zach Mandleblatt followed with a two-run homer that cleared the wall in right. Kyle Manus followed Mandleblatt, with a solo shot to left, giving the Slammers a 3-0 advantage.

After surviving the second inning, Gonzalez-Diaz went on a tear, retiring the next 11 batters he faced. In addition, he sat down 15 out of the final 16 batters he faced after the second inning.

The Crushers plated their lone run in the bottom of the seventh inning. Maxwell retired the first two batters of the frame, before Rogelio Noris belted a solo homerun, his first of the season to get the Crushers on the board.

In the ninth, Gered Mochizuki began the frame with a walk, bringing the tying run to the plate in Andrew Davis. Davis grounded into a 4-6-3 double play, and Amalio Diaz (2) scored the save when he got Russ Moldenhauer to groundout to third, ending the contest.

Mochizuki reached three times in four plate appearances, with a base hit and two walks, extending his on base streak to eight games. Jason Taylor belted a leadoff double in the second inning to extend his on base streak to seven games.

Maxwell earned the victory, allowing just a run on three hits over seven solid innings and fanned seven in the process. Diaz worked a scoreless ninth inning to snag his second save in as many days, while Gonzalez-Diaz took the loss, after surrendering three runs on five hits over seven innings.

The Crushers will finish their three game series with the Joliet Slammers, at All Pro Freight Stadium on Thursday night. Left hander Sam Strickland (0-1, 5.40) will start for the Crushers and the Slammers will counter with right hander Jeremy Tietze (0-1, 9.64). The first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM.
