CornBelters Fall to Rockford

LOVES PARK, Ill. - The Normal CornBelters, presented by Illinois Corn Farmers, gave up the lead by surrendering four runs in the fifth inning to fall to the Rockford RiverHawks 7-5 on Wednesday night at RiverHawks Stadium.

Rockford struck right away in the first inning, taking advantage of three walks and three hits before recording an out to take a 3-0 lead and end the night for CornBelters starter Tyler Stovall. The Belters answered with a run in the second as Pat Trettel singled to lead off the frame and scored on a Chico Gomez double. Normal tied the game in the third when Brantley Meier led off with a single, went to third on a throwing error on Alvaro Ramirez's bunt attempt and scored on a ground out. Ramirez came home on a sacrifice fly by Steven Felix to tie the game at 3-3 in the third inning.

The Belters took the lead in the fifth when Sean Wilson stroked a one-out single, stole second and and advanced to third on a bad throw, then came home on a ground out by Steven Felix to grab a 4-3 lead.

The RiverHawks collected another big inning in the fifth, scoring four times on four hits, and error and two walks to take a 7-4 advantage.

Normal got one run back in the eighth when Brantley Meier drew a two-out walk and scored on a double by Alvaro Ramirez.

Jacob Liedka (0-1) took the loss while RiverHawks starter Ziggie VanderWall (1-0) earned the win. Mike Lee pitched a scoreless ninth for his first save.

The CornBelters conclude the series at Rockford on Thursday at 7:05 p.m. with left-hander Justin Albert (0-1, 7.71 ERA) taking the ball for Normal against RiverHawks righty Cody Hallahan (0-1, 1.86). Pre-game on WJBC.com begins at 6:50.
