River City Rascals News Release
O'Fallon, Mo. - River City scored eight of their 12 runs via the longball on an off-night for the pitching staff that saw rookie Doug Shields (1-0) earn his first professional win in his debut with the Rascals as they topped Traverse City by a final of 12-9.
Traverse City (6-5) took a 2-0 lead in the second inning on an error followed by a single from Brian Heere but the Rascals (10-1) responded in the bottom of the innings with four runs on four-straight hits. Charlie Lisk led off the frame with a homerun to left-center then Gerardo Avila and Josh Workman followed with singles before Chris Andreas lauched a three-run circuit clout off the clubhouse beyond the right-center wall for a 4-2 Rascals lead.
Workman and Bobby Burk picked up RBIs in the third inning to stretch the lead to 6-2 but the Beach Bums battled back in the fourth, scoring three runs on a bases loaded double from Kyle Colligan that closed the gap to 6-5and chased River City starter Justin Edwards from the game.
The Rascals would answer again in the bottom of the inning, plating two runs on consecutive singles from Jason Patton and Lisk after a one-out double from Jeremy Synan to make the score 8-5.
Traverse City bounced right back in the top of the fifth to take a 9-8 lead with four runs on four hits off reliever Justin Gill who gave way to Brandon Cunniff who allowed the go-ahead run to score.
Once again, River City would respond on the bottom of the inning.
A single and two walks loaded the bases with two outs in the fifth when Patton, on the 11th pitch of his at-bat, launched a towering homerun to right-field for the second grand slam of the season for River City to take a 12-9 lead. Both offenses were kept off the scoreboard the rest of the game.
Shields, signed to his first pro contract prior to the game, settled the game down by striking out three in three hitless innings of work to get the game to Rascals' closer Dustin Umberger in the ninth, who locked down his fifth save in as many chances to give River City the 12-9 win, their ninth-straight.
River City goes for their third-straight series sweep Thursday when Preston Vancil (1-0, 0.90) takes the mound against Traverse City's Brooks Belter (0-0, 2.25) with first pitch set for 7:05 at T.R. Hughes Ballpark.
NOTES:
-six of the nine runs scored for the Beach Bums reached base on a walk or hit-by-pitch
-River City struck out 15 Beach Bums who entered the game with a league-high 89 strikeouts in their first 10 games.
