Gateway Grizzlies News Release

Sauget, Ill. - John Shelby and the Grizzlies eked past the Otters of Evansville 4-3 by way of a walk off sac-fly to even the series at a game apiece Wednesday night at GCS Ballpark.

Gateway (5-6) jumped out early Wednesday night on RBI pokes by Jerod Yakubik and Jon Myers in the first and second frames before falling dormant without a hit until DH Sam Mahoney blasted a solo shot to left to tie the game at three in the seventh. Slugger Shelby delivered the game winner with two on in the bottom of the ninth to seal the three hour and ten minute journey.

Grizzlie starter and former St. Louis Cardinal farmhand Cale Johnson (0-1) finished with a final line of five and a third innings pitched, with three earned runs on six hits with five walks and two strikeouts in a no decision performance. Phillip Reamy, Logan Mahon, and Paul Tremlin (1-0) all aided in relief out of the Gateway pen. Tremlin claimed the win with one and a third frames of no hit baseball and two strikeouts.

Evansville (5-6) righty Dan Blewett (1-0) went five and a third innings of work while allowing only two runs on four hits with eight K's.

In promotional action, Izzy the Grizzlie had an extensive list of friends attending the Gateway mascot's Birthday Party exhibition at GCS Ballpark, including the one and only Fredbird of the St. Louis Cardinals and 2,532 joyous fans. Joining Fredbird on the guest list was Kashmir the Snow Leopard (SWIC), Coby the Bear (GCS), Eddie the Cougar (SIUE), Bear (WashU), Griffin (Fontbonne University), Seymour (Splash City), Lynx (Lindenwood), Gorlock (Webster University), and Bel-O Man (Bel-O).

The Grizzlies will wrap up the three-game set against the Otters tomorrow night at 7:05 pm. Promotions at GCS Ballpark will be three-fold on Thursday evening, featuring Bark in the Park presented by Olsen Veterinary Clinic, Gateway Ladies Night, and the MVP Program.
