Joliet Slammers News Release

JOLIET SLAMMERS (5-6) @ LAKE ERIE CRUSHERS (4-6)

Wednesday, May 30 - 6:05 p.m. CT All Pro Freight Stadium - Avon, OH Game #12 - Road Game #6 (5-6), (2-3)

RHP #4 Steven Maxwell (1-1, 3.18 ERA) vs. RHP #31 Eric Gonzalez-Diaz (0-2, 7.71 ERA)

Last time out...

The Slammers scored two times in the seventh inning to rally from a 2-1 deficit to win by a score of 3-2 over the Lake Erie Crushers Tuesday morning. Tommy Mendoza gutted out six innings to earn the victory while Amalio Diaz picked up his first save of the season. Trailing 1-0 in the sixth, Erik Lis hit a high fly ball down the right field line that just landed fair. Hector Pellot went from first to third base on the play but the throw in got away, allowing Pellot to score on the error and tie the game. The Crushers responded in the bottom half of the frame with another run to lead 2-1. But Brad Netzel doubled to start the seventh and Trevor Willis tripled him home. Then with one away Ben Hewett executed a perfect suicide squeeze to drive in Willis and give Joliet the lead. For the Slammers it was their first day game victory of the 2012 season. They had been 0-3 in day games entering the contest.

For Starters...

Steven Maxwell is coming off a dominant performance against the Traverse City Beach Bums on May 24. He struck out 10 batters in seven innings of scoreless baseball to earn his first professional victory. He scattered three hits and walked three in the win. Maxwell put up outstanding numbers at Division One powerhouse Texas Christian University and got drafted twice, once by the Minnesota Twins, and once by the Chicago Cubs. Maxwell's junior season at TCU saw him tally an 11-2 record with a 2.70 ERA. Maxwell tossed 103.1 innings that season and struck out 93 batters while only walking 34 in 18 starts. He was a 2010 2nd-team Louisville Slugger all-American, the 2010 Mountain West Conference Pitcher of the Year, a 2010 1st-team All-Mountain West Conference selection, a 2010 ABCA 2nd-team All-Midwest Region selection and he made the 2010 NCAA Fort Worth Regional All-Tournament Team. His pitching helped lead TCU to the College World Series. Maxwell was drafted by the Minnesota Twins in the 12th round of the 2010 draft but elected to return to TCU for his senior season. Injuries shortened Maxwell's senior campaign but the right-hander still went 5-1 with a 3.13 ERA in 11 starts. He was named to the All-Mountain West 2nd Team at the end of the season. Maxwell finished his collegiate career with a 21-5 record and a 3.43 ERA. He was chosen by the Chicago Cubs in the 37th round of the 2011 draft.

Hewett is hitting...

Catcher Ben Hewett is currently tied for the Frontier League lead in batting average as he's hitting .407 on the season.

Triple your pleasure...

Trevor Willis smacked the first triple of his career and the first triple of Joliet's season yesterday.

Trying to get back to .500...

With a win today the Slammers would have a .500 record for the first time since the end of play on May 18 when they were 1-1. The Slammers have not been over .500 yet on the season.

Lock 'em down!

The Slammers' bullpen has an ERA of 1.89 on the season in 38 innings. The pitching staff as a whole currently sports an ERA of 2.63. Meanwhile, opposing batters are only hitting .224 against the Slammers, second lowest in the league behind Evansville (.167).

Erroneous!

The Slammers have surrendered the most unearned runs in the league (17) while committing 13 errors on the season (tied for third most in the league).

Movin' on up!

RHP Gaby Hernandez became the fourth Slammers player to move on to affiliated baseball when his contract was purchased by the Arizona Diamondbacks on Monday, May 21. He joins LHP Aaron Dott, Joliet native RHP Ryan Quigley and Darien native RHP Chris Pack as former Slammers in MLB organizations.
