Aberdeen IronBirds News Release

Aberdeen, MD - It was another heartbreaker for the Aberdeen IronBirds. Trying to end a five-game losing streak, the IronBirds took on the Staten Island Yankees, Short-Season Class A affiliate of the New York Yankees. The announced crowd of 6,588 saw the Yankees score a run in the top of the 10th to secure a 3-2 win.

Jake Cowan took to the hill for his second start of the season. He cruised through the first two innings before trouble hit in the third. The lead-off batter Zach Wilson walked, and came around to score on a one out RBI single by Shane Brown, giving the Yankees a 1-0 lead. Cowan struck out Mason Williams and Angelo Gumbs to end the threat.

Aberdeen would get themselves on the board in the bottom of the fourth. After Connor Narron reached on an error charged to Yankee shortstop Cito Culver, Jeremy Nowak stepped up and batted Narron in with a single and then advanced to second on the throw home. Wynston Sawyer then scored Nowak with an RBI single of his own to give the IronBirds a 2-1 lead.

The lead did not last long. In the bottom of the fifth, with one out, Cowan surrendered a solo home run to Brown, tying the game at two apiece.

Staten Island threatened again in the seventh and the ninth, but things would be quiet on the scoreboard until the top of the 10th. Cody Grice worked a one out walk and later scored when Ali Castillo beat out a close play at first base. Castillo came into the game in the ninth inning to pinch run for Brown.

In the Aberdeen 10th, Joe Velleggia struck out to end the game with Martin Serrata on third and Mychal Givens on first.

Philip Wetherell got credit for the win for the Yankees. He pitched a perfect ninth, and then Brandon Pinder came on in the 10th inning and secured his second save on the young season. For Aberdeen, Cowan went five innings, allowed five hits, two runs (both earned), surrendered three walks and earned seven strikeouts. Jose Mota took the loss for Aberdeen. He pitched 1.2 innings, giving up two hits and one run (earned).

The IronBirds and Yankees will do battle again tomorrow as Aberdeen looks to snap its six game slide. David Baker (0-0, 1.80) will make his second start of the season for Aberdeen, while Staten Island will send William Oliver (0-0, 0.00) to the mound. First pitch is 7:05 p.m.
