Aberdeen IronBirds News Release

Tonight's Match-up

The IronBirds will attempt to snap a five-game losing streak tonight against the Staten Island Yankees (Class-A Short-Season affiliate of the New York Yankees). The IronBirds are trying to bounce back after being swept in three games by the Brooklyn Cyclones at MCU Park. Aberdeen will have right-hander Jake Cowan on the hill. Cowan is making his second start of the season. Cowan took the loss in his first start against Hudson Valley, beginning Aberdeen's losing streak. He'll go up against right-hander Bryan Mitchell.

Close Losses

Through the first six games of the season, the IronBirds are tied for a league worst 1-5 record. The five losses, however, have all been close. The IronBirds have lost three games by one run. The other two losses have been by a combined five runs. In two of the losses, Aberdeen has put the tying run in scoring position in its final at bat, but has been unable to score.

Way Better Than Your Average Joe

IronBirds first baseman Joe Velleggia is currently leading the club in nearly every offensive category. Coming into tonight's ball game, Velleggia is batting .400 with a home run and four RBI. He leads the team with eight hits and three doubles.

Divisional Losses

The IronBirds' first 19 games of the season are against McNamara Division foes. Because of the 1-5 start, Aberdeen is getting buried early. Six games into the season the club is already four games back of the first-place Brooklyn Cyclones. The IronBirds host the Cyclones for three games starting Sunday at Ripken Stadium.

Strong Starts

Despite the 1-5 start, the IronBirds have gotten fairly strong starting pitching. The five Aberdeen starters have combined for a 2.77 ERA. The staff has allowed just 23 hits and struck out 32 batters in 29 innings of work.

Staten Island Yankees

The IronBirds have struggled in their history against the Yankees. The team is just 37-52 against the Baby Bombers all-time. Last season, Aberdeen went 5-5 against Staten Island.
