Sugar Land Space Cowboys News Release
SUGAR LAND, Texas - The Sugar Land Skeeters snapped a six-game losing streak on Wednesday evening with a 4-3 win over the Somerset Patriots. The win improves the Skeeters record to 12-20 in the second half and 48-54 overall.
Travis Scott gave the Skeeters their first lead in the series with Somerset on a two-out, solo home run in the top of the first. The long ball was the third by Sugar Land's backstop this season and first since May 21.
The Patriots quickly deflated the early lead by the Skeeters, pushing across three runs in the bottom of the inning. Derek Blacksher surrendered base hits to the first four batters, allowing Somerset to post an early 3-1 cushion.
Aside from the first inning, Derek Blacksher threw a phenomenal outing, allowing two hits for his final five innings of work while walking one and striking out five. He earned his fifth-win of the season, improving to 5-3.
Both starting pitchers would settle in for the middle innings, not allowing either side to chip away or add to the deficit. In the top of the fifth, Renny Osuna roped a one-out double into the alley before Patrick Palmeiro snapped an 0-for-23 stretch with an RBI single into center, narrowing the score to 3-2.
The Skeeters finally reclaimed the lead in the top of the sixth after a pair of leadoff doubles tied the game. Scott and Delwyn Young launched consecutive doubles to center to open the inning and chase Somerset starting pitcher, R.J. Seidel from the game. After a groundout, Chris Wallace poked a single to left to score Young and regain the edge for the Skeeters, 4-3.
Robbie Weinhardt, Dan Runzler, Tim Gustafson and Derrick Loop combined to throw three, no-hit innings to prevent the Patriots from coming back. Loop picked up his 11th-save of the season by earning a four-out save.
