Blue Crabs Sweep Doubleheader

(Waldorf, M.D. August 11th 2015) ---Southern Maryland snapped their longest losing streak of the season winning game one of the doubleheader by the final of 5-4, and winning the second ballgame 6-5.

In game one, Southern Maryland fell down early, as Bridgeport scored a run in the top of the first. In the bottom of the frame, Jovan Rosa was at the plate with the bases loaded, and starting pitcher D.J. Mitchell walked Rosa to force in a run to tie the game at 1-1.

Southern Maryland put up a three spot on the board in the bottom of the second. Casey Frawley led off things with a double, followed by a hit by pitch of Antone DeJesus, and a walk to Fred Lewis to load the bases. Two batters later, Zach Wilson came to the plate, and drove in two runs with a double to make it 3-1. One more run was added when Jake Opitz grounded into a fielder's choice to make it 4-1.

After Southern Maryland added a run in the bottom of the third, Bridgeport attempted to make a comeback in the top of the fourth. John Alonso led things off with a double, followed by an error by shortstop Casey Frawley allowing Wilson Batista to reach base. RHP Brian Grening was able to get to pop outs of Andres Rodriguez, and Jobduan Morales, but Matt Wessinger drove in two runs with a two run triple to cut the Blue Crabs lead to 5-4. After a rain delay of one hour and 45 minutes, the two teams resumed play, and the bullpen combination of Santos, Eppley, and Hamren were able to hold things down to give the blue Crabs the victory.

In game two, Bridgeport once again took the early lead, scoring three runs in the top of the first. Bryan Sabatella would score on a Bryant Nelson single to make it 1-0. Wellington Dotel then hit a ground rule double to put runners on second and third for John Alonso who hit a sacrifice fly to score Nelson. Wilson Batista followed with an RBI Double to score Alonso to make it 3-0.

Southern Maryland answered with three runs in the bottom of the first to tie the game. Jovan Rosa hit a sacrifice fly to score Fred Lewis, and the next hitter Jake Opitz hit a three run homerun to tie the game. Southern Maryland scored two more runs in the bottom of the second and one in the bottom of the fifth to solidify the victory. Fred Lewis, Craig Maddox and Antone DeJesus each had an RBI in the game late.

The finale of the series will take place tomorrow at 7:05 P.M. at Regency Furniture Stadium. LHP Robert Carson (3-0, 1.74) will toss for Bridgeport, while RHP Daryl Thompson (4-3, 3.81) will throw for Southern Maryland.
