Bridgeport Bluefish News Release
(Waldorf, MD- August 12, 2015) - The Bridgeport Bluefish (19-13, 45-57) defeated the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs (13-19, 55-47) 5-2 in the series finale at Regency Furniture Stadium on Wednesday night. The 'Fish split the four-game set with the First Half Freedom Division Champions.
Bridgeport Starting Pitcher Robert Carson (4-0) earned the victory, pitching six and one-third innings, giving up just one unearned run on seven hits, walking two, striking out ten, and throwing one wild pitch. Southern Maryland Starting Pitcher Daryl Thompson (4-4) suffered the loss, tossing seven innings, allowing two runs on seven hits, striking out eight, while not walking a batter and surrendering two home runs. All-Star Patrick Mincey pitched a scoreless ninth inning striking out one in registering his 21st save of the season.
Southern Maryland took a 1-0 lead off Carson in the bottom half of the fifth inning on an RBI double to left field by Antone DeJesus, scoring Keith Castillo. Bridgeport answered right back in the top of the sixth off Thompson with solo home runs by Ethan Chapman to lead off the frame and Bryant Nelson with one out, and in the blink of an eye the Bluefish had a 2-1 edge. Chapman launched his first roundtripper of 2015 and Nelson blasted his third big fly since being acquired in a trade from the Lancaster Barnstormers on July 6th.
The Bluefish were clinging to a one-run lead at 3-2 as they looked for insurance in the top of the ninth, and that is exactly what they got off Blue Crabs reliever Sergio Perez. Jobduan Morales doubled with one out, and advanced to third when Josh Prince hustled to first on a dropped third strike. Prince then advanced to second with his 16th stolen base, and the 'Fish had two in scoring position. Morales later scored on an error, and Andres Rodriguez would make it 5-2 in favor of the visitors with a sacrifice fly, bringing home Prince. The game was now left in the capable right arm of Mincey, and the closer induced Casey Stevenson to ground out to second with one man on to end the game. Mincey is fifth overall in the Atlantic League with 21 saves. Carson continues to dominate when towing the rubber as a starter for skipper Ricky Van Asselberg, having won three consecutive starts. Bridgeport is now 5-0 in games in which the southpaw has started in 2015, and Carson in those starts has a miniscule 0.69 ERA and 41 strikeouts. Nelson led the offensive attack for Bridgeport with three hits.
The Bluefish return to the Ballpark at Harbor Yard on Thursday, August 13th when they welcome in the York Revolution for a four game series. The first 500 fans in attendance will receive a Keep Calm and 'Fish On T- Shirt. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
