Bridgeport Bluefish News Release
(Waldorf, MD- August 11, 2015) - The Bridgeport Bluefish (18-13, 44-57) were swept by the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs (13-18, 55-46) in two seven inning games at Regency Furniture Stadium on Tuesday night, losing the opener 5-4 and dropping the nightcap 6-5.
In Game One, Bridgeport Starting Pitcher D.J. Mitchell (6-8) suffered the loss, tossing three innings, allowing five runs (four earned runs) on six hits, walking four, striking out one, hitting one batter, and surrendering one home run. Southern Maryland Starting Pitcher Brian Grening picked up a no-decision, pitching four innings, giving up four runs (one earned run) on five hits, striking out three, not issuing a free pass and throwing a wild pitch. Cody Eppley (3-3) earned the win out of the bullpen retiring all three batters he faced. Erik Hamren pitched a clean seventh inning with one strikeout to earn his 24th save of the season.
Bridgeport took the early 1-0 lead off Grening in the top half of the first inning on a run-scoring single to left field by Welington Dotel, plating Bluefish newcomer Bryan Sabatella, who singled in his first at bat in a 'Fish uniform, and then stole second base before coming in to score on the base knock by Dotel. Southern Maryland answered right back in the bottom of the frame off Mitchell on a two-out, bases loaded walk by former Bluefish Jovan Rosa. The Blue Crabs took their first lead of the night off Mitchell in the second inning with three runs for a 4-1 edge and never looked back. Zach Wilson's two-run single gave the home team a 3-1 lead and they added an insurance run on a throwing error by Bryant Nelson trying to make the turn on a double play ball hit by Jake Opitz.
Trailing 5-1, Bridgeport got back to within 5-4 with three more runs in the fourth off Grening. Matt Wessinger belted a two-out, two-run triple to straightaway center field bringing home John Alonso and Wilson Batista. Wessinger would later trim the Blue Crabs lead to a single run on a wild pitch thrown by Grening, and the 'Fish rally put them right back in the ballgame, but Hamren had other ideas as he retired the side in order in the top of the seventh to close it out. Sabatella, Nelson, Alonso, Jobduan Morales, and Wessinger each had one of Bridgeport's five hits in game one.
In Game Two, Bridgeport Starting Pitcher Ray Hanson (0-1) took the loss in his Bluefish debut, going three innings, giving up five runs on four hits, walking five, striking out two, and allowing one home run. Southern Maryland Starting Pitcher Brian Burres (6-7) picked up the victory, tossing five innings, allowing five runs (four earned runs) on eight hits, walking three, striking out three, and throwing one wild pitch. Trey Barham tossed a scoreless seventh inning for his first save of the season.
Bridgeport took a 3-0 lead in the top half of the first inning off Burres on run-scoring singles by Nelson and Batista, and a sacrifice fly by Alonso. Southern Maryland tied the game at 3 in the bottom of the frame off Hanson on a sacrifice fly by Rosa and a two-run home run to right center by Opitz. The Blue Crabs added a pair of runs in the second to take a 5-3 lead. The Bluefish cut the deficit in half to 5-4 in the fourth inning on an RBI fielder's choice by Ethan Chapman. Bridgeport made it 6-5 in the sixth on a sacrifice fly by Sabatella, but that was as close as they would get as Barham retired the side in order to complete the sweep of the twin-bill. Alonso led the way for Bridgeport in game two with three hits.
The Bluefish return to the Ballpark at Harbor Yard on Thursday, August 13th when they welcome in the York Revolution for a four game series. The first 500 fans in attendance will receive a Keep Calm and 'Fish On T- Shirt. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
