SUGAR LAND, Texas - The Sugar Land Skeeters fell victim to a strong pitching performance from Robert Carson of Bridgeport to take a 7-3 setback on Monday night at Constellation Field. The loss drops the Skeeters to 50-57 on the year and 14-23 in the second half.
Carson allowed just one run for the Bluefish over 8.0 innings of work. The former big leaguer allowed one run on five hits with a walk and seven strikeouts. The southpaw improved to 5-0 on the season with his victory over Sugar Land.
Bridgeport jumped out to an early 1-0 advantage in the top of the first. Josh Prince was hit by Kelvin Villa's 0-1 offering with one out and immediately stole second to move into scoring position. After a strikeout, Welington Dotel singled inside the third base bag down the line to score Prince from second.
The Bluefish added a run in the top of the second on another timely, two out hit. Andres Rodriguez sprayed a one-out single through the left side of the infield and advanced to second on a passed ball. Following a groundout that allowed Rodriguez to move to third, Ethan Chapman poked a bloop single into center to increase the lead to 2-0.
Bridgeport continued to make a splash against Villa in the top of the fifth. Bryan Sabatella singled into center to open the inning before a one-out triple from Dotel increased the lead to 3-0. Wilson Batista lifted a sacrifice fly to left to score Dotel and push the score to 4-0.
Sugar Land chipped away in the bottom of the eighth to crack the scoreboard. Johan Limonta singled through the left-side of the infield and Renny Osuna drove a single into left to move Limonta to third. Amadeo Zazueta followed with a sacrifice fly to right to narrow the gap to 4-1.
The Bluefish expanded the lead to 7-1 in the top of the ninth to put the game out of reach. The Skeeters narrowed the deficit in the home half of the ninth on a two-run double from Johan Limonta, but Sugar Land dropped the decision, 7-3.
