Lancaster Stormers News Release
Mike McDade and Lance Zawadzki belted homers to lead the Barnstormers to an 8-3 series opening win at Campbell's Field over the Camden Riversharks on Monday evening.
The win guaranteed that Lancaster would retain at least a three-game lead over York in the Freedom Division's second half.
McDade caught hold of a pitch from Sean Gleason (5-12) with two outs and Collier at third in the first, driving it high off the right field scoreboard for a quick 2-0 lead.
Lancaster added a pair of runs on the second on an infield single by Collier and a grounder by Anderson Feliz after Gleason loaded the bases on two walks and a single in the inning.
However, it was Zawadzki who opened up the cushion in the fifth inning. Gleason was on his way to squirming out of the inning after Kent Matthes and McDade opened the frame with consecutive line drive singles. Charlie Cutler grounded to second, and Brian Cavazos-Galvez fouled out to first, but Zawadzki would not let Gleason off the hook, jacking a three-run blast over the back wall down the right field line for a 7-1 lead.
Madison Boer (1-1) yielded nine hits over six innings but walked no one. Brandon Chaves scored Camden's first run in the opening inning, crossing on a Paddy Matera ground ball after tripling down the right field line.
Jose Gil doubled inside the third base bag to open the fifth, moved to third on a groundout and scored when Michael Rockett beat Boer to the first base bag on a grounder to McDade.
Camden's biggest threat came in the sixth. Carlos Guzman singled to right to lead off the inning. Joel Guzman stroked a grounder to second baseman Luke Hughes, but the ball was misplayed for an error as Carlos Guzman scampered to third. Ryan Strieby singled up the middle to cut the lead to 8-3. Boer caught Daniel Rockett looking at a third strike, bringing up Gil.
The right-handed batting catcher jerked another smash down the third base line. Feliz, whose glove was Boer's best friend all night, speared the liner at his ankles on the backhanded side, then fired a quick strike to Hughes, doubling off Joel Guzman to end the inning.
And, for all intents and purposes, the game as neither team collected a base hit over the final three innings.
Lancaster will send Joe Gardner (7-3) to the mound on Tuesday against lefty Bill Murphy (3-13). Fans may tune into 1390-AM, WLAN; rumba1390.com or the I Heart Radio cell phone app, beginning at 6:45.
NOTES: Feliz extended his hitting streak to 12 games with an infield single in the sixth...First baseman Strieby slipped and fell after fielding the ground ball...Zawadzki tied Cavazos-Galvez for the league home run lead with 15...Lancaster's bullpen pitched three more scoreless innings...Lancaster took the lead in the season series, 7-6.
