LONG ISLAND, N.Y. - The Sugar Land Skeeters were unable to salvage a game in the series with Long Island, falling to the Ducks, 2-0, at Bethpage Ballpark in New York. The loss, Sugar Land's third-straight, drops the Skeeters to 28-26 on the season while the Ducks improve to 35-17 on the year.
Roy Merritt turned in a quality outing in his first road start of the season, surrendering two runs on five hits with no walks while striking out three over seven innings of work. The two-run home run in the fourth snapped a 17-inning streak of not allowing a run for the southpaw and proved to be the deciding factor in the game.
After throwing three shutout frames to start the game, Merritt finally saw his consecutive inning scoreless streak come to an end in the bottom of the fourth. Lew Ford reached on an infield single to third with one out before Randy Ruiz lifted a ball over the outfield wall for a home run, staking the Ducks to a 2-0 lead.
In the top of the ninth, the Skeeters opened the inning with a single to center from Delwyn Young, but was quickly erased when Johan Limonta grounded into a double play. Dustin Martin legged out an infield single to second and Travis Scott drew a walk to bring the go-ahead run to the plate in the form of Kevin Russo. The former New York Yankee was unable to reach base, however, as a groundout to third ended the contest.
Sugar Land's offense continued to struggle after the departure of Jeremy Barfield to the Colorado Rockies Double-A affiliate. In three games without the power-hitting outfielder, Sugar Land has scored just two runs and mustered 12 hits in the last 23 innings.
