Inland Empire 66ers News Release
San Jose, CA- The Inland Empire 66ers downed the San Jose Giants 5-4 in ten innings on Tuesday night to snap a six-game losing streak. In the tightly contested affair, the class and generosity of the San Jose Giants organization was on display as the Giants hosted #SBSTRONG night at Municipal Stadium. The Giants wore distinct arrowhead emblazoned jersey with motto #SBSTRONG on them as a show of solidarity with the San Bernardino Community due to the tragic shooting in December 2015. San Jose, who wore the jerseys in April at San Manuel Stadium, donned them again with the proceeds of their sale going to the Arrowhead United Way SB Relief Fund to aid victims of the tragic events at the Inland Regional Center.
With the spirit of goodwill alive and well the 66ers took a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning against Giants' southpaw DJ Snelten. Hutton Moyer bunted for a base-hit and Taylor Ward followed with a single. They were both knocked in when Wade Wass drilled a double off the wall in left. The Giants got a run in the bottom of the fourth and an unearned run in the top bottom of the fifth to tie the game 2-2. San Jose took a lead in the sixth against Inland Empire starter Jake Jewell when Robbie Garvey drilled a two-run triple to the wall in right-center and gave the Giants a 4-2 lead.
The 66ers answered in the bottom of the seventh as Zach Houchins drew a one-out walk against Snelten. Ayendy Perez followed with an infield single. Ryan Sebra then buzzed a liner into the right field corner two knock in two and tie the game 4-4.
The game was tied until the tenth when San Jose (36-28) reliever Pat Young (3-1) surrendered a single down the right field line to Ward. Wass smoked a single to left and Roberto Baldoquin walked to load the bases. Houchins then delivered the go-ahead RBI single giving Inland Empire (21-44) a 5-4 advantage. Reliever Adam Hofacket (1-0) had tossed a scoreless ninth and despite a Brandon Bednar single for San Jose to make it interesting, slammed the door shut in the tenth for the win. Ward, Wass and Perez all had two-hit games for Inland Empire while Bednar notched three hits for the Giants. The Sixers got two scoreless innings of relief from Ronnie Muck. Oddly, the win was the club's first on a Tuesday after starting the year 0-8 on that particular day of the week.
The series concludes Wednesday at 12:30 pm. The contest can be heard live at 66ers.com.
