Inland Empire 66ers News Release

San Jose, CA- The San Jose Giants downed Inland Empire in the series finale 5-4 at Municipal Stadium on Wednesday to take the three-game set two-games-to-one. Each game of the series was a one-run decision. The victory was a comeback win for the Giants punctuated by its pitching staff retiring the final 12 batters it faced including six via the strikeout.

Inland Empire out-hit the Giants 10-8 in the game including two hits for Ayendy Perez whose two-run double gave the 66ers (21-45) a 4-1 lead in the top of the sixth inning. Perez was thown out trying to stretch the play into a triple. He was the last Sixer to reach base as starter Mark Reyes (6-1) for the Giants, who had given up all ten hits in the first five frames settled down for a perfect sixth and seventh. Inland Empire starter Alex Klonowski was strong in the first five frames but ran into trouble in the sixth when the Giants tied the game on Daniel Carbonell's two-run double. Klonowski allowed four runs over six innings on six hits with a walk and four Ks in a no-decsion.

The Giants took a 5-4 lead in the bottom of the seventh inning due in part to a controversial decision. With one out and southpaw Kevin Grendell (0-1) on the mound, San Jose nine-hole hitter Robbie Garvey hit a grounder to third base and was thrown out by IE 3B Hutton Moyer. However, Garvey was awarded first base on catcher's interference by the home plate umpire. Inland Empire Manager Chad Tracy was ejected arguing the call. The play loomed large as Garvey advanced to second on a groundout and then scored what proved to be the winning run on Steven Duggar's RBI, two-out single.

Reyes Moronta tossed a perfect eighth for San Jose (37-28) with three Ks and Rodolfo Martinez slammed the door in the ninth to earn his 19th save. Zach Houchins and Perez had two-hit games for the Sixers. Wade Wass extended his hitting streak to nine games when he slammed a two run homer to right in the fifth inning for the 66ers; it was his sixth of the year.

Inland Empire opens a series at Modesto on Thursday at 7:05 pm. The contest can be heard live at 66ers.com and 1570 AM KPRO.
