San Jose Giants News Release
SAN JOSE, CA - Inland Empire's Zach Houchins hit a tiebreaking RBI single in the top of the 10th inning to send the 66ers to a 5-4 victory over the San Jose Giants on Tuesday evening at Municipal Stadium. The loss officially eliminates the Giants (36-28) from first half North Division title contention. San Jose and Inland Empire have now split the first two games of their series.
Brandon Bednar (3-for-5) had three hits while Robbie Garvey (1-for-4, 3B, 2 RBI) drove home a pair of runs with a triple to lead the Giants offensively in defeat. Ronnie Jebavy (2-for-5), Steven Duggar (2-for-5, 2B) and Ty Ross (2-for-4, RBI) also finished with multi-hit games.
Tuesday's contest was scoreless through three innings. San Jose starter D.J. Snelten allowed just one single over the first three frames and had retired nine straight 66ers batters until Hutton Moyer reached on a bunt single with one out in the top of the fourth. Taylor Ward followed with a single before Wade Wass doubled off the left field fence to score both runners for a 2-0 Inland Empire lead.
The Giants though battled back with single runs in the fourth and fifth innings against Sixers starter Jake Jewell to tie the game. In the bottom of the fourth, Chris Shaw led off with a double, moved to third on Jonah Arenado's single and then scored on Ross' one-out single. An inning later, Jebavy led off with a single, advanced to second on Jewell's wild pick-off throw, took third when Duggar grounded out and scored on a wild pitch.
San Jose then took the lead with a two-run bottom of the sixth. Singles from Bednar and Richard Rodriguez put runners on first and second with two outs. Garvey then stepped to the plate and ripped a triple into the right field corner gap scoring both runners for a 4-2 Giants lead.
Meanwhile, Snelten breezed through the fifth and sixth innings, but ran into trouble in the top of the seventh after San Jose had moved in front. With one out, Houchins walked before Ayendy Perez reached on an infield single. Ryan Sebra then doubled into the right field corner plating both Houchins and Perez to tie the game 4-4.
Snelten, who received a no-decision, pitched 6 1/3 innings with four runs (all earned) and six hits allowed. The left-hander walked four and struck out three.
Dusten Knight (1 2/3 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 SO) relieved Snelten after the game-tying hit in the seventh and retired all five batters he faced. Reyes Moronta (1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 SO) then pitched a scoreless top of the ninth working around a one-out single and a walk to keep the game deadlocked.
The Giants threatened in the bottom of the eighth as Bednar singled with one out before Ross walked, but Rodriguez struck out and Garvey grounded out to end the inning. In the bottom of the ninth, C.J Hinojosa reached on a two-out error, but was stranded when Shaw struck out.
Pat Young entered from the bullpen to begin the top of the 10th for San Jose and ultimately surrendered the game-deciding run. With one out, Ward singled to right before Wass lined a single into left. A walk to Roberto Baldoquin followed to load the bases. Houchins was up next and he lined a 1-1 pitch into right center field for a single scoring Ward to give the Sixers a 5-4 lead.
In the bottom of the 10th, Bednar singled with one out to put the potential tying run on base, however Ross and Rodriguez were retired on back-to-back fly outs to end the game.
Adam Hofacket (1-0) earned the win for Inland Empire after tossing scoreless ninth and tenth innings. Hofacket allowed just one hit and struck out two.
Young (3-1) was saddled with his first loss of the season.
