Six-Run Seventh Inning Sends Frederick To Comeback Win
September 5, 2009 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Frederick Keys News Release
Trailing 2-0 in the seventh inning a catcher's interference ruling kept the Keys seventh alive and Frederick made it pay, scoring six times en route to an 8-3 win over Wilmington at Frawley Stadium Saturday night.
With runners at the corners and two men down, Kyle Hudson hit a groudnball at Wilmington shortstop Josh Johnson. He flipped to second base for the out and began trotting towards the home dugout. There was one problem.
Home plate umpire Doug Vines was pointing at catcher Matt Morizio. The swing of Hudson had grazed his glove and the ruling of catcher's interference loaded the bases, setting the table for Frederick's dramatic rally.
Keys shortstop Greg Miclat lined an RBI-single to left field bringing home a run. Next up was Robbie Widlansky who drilled a double to right-center field, clearing the bases to give the Keys a 4-2 lead.
Frederick would score two more on a Joe Mahoney double, bringing home two runs to up the lead to 6-2.
The Keys got a strong start from spot starter Pat Kantakevich who went six strong innings allowing just one earned run in his league debut. Kantachevich (1-0), a product from Rockville, MD, gave way to Joe Esposito who went three innings for his third save with Frederick.
Wilmington starter Danny Duffy shut down Frederick in six innings, striking out eight in a no-decision. Duffy did not allow an earned run in 30 1/3rd innings against the Keys in five starts this year.
Widlansky hit his seventh home run in the ninth inning, a two-run home run to right-center field, to put the wraps on a five-RBI night.
The series continues Sunday, September 6th at 1:35 p.m. as Chorye Spoone will be on the hill for the Keys at Frawley Stadium.
