Dash Rise Late, Send Pelicans To Tenth-Straight Defeat
September 5, 2009 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release
MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - With the turnoff for the Carolina League Playoffs securely in their rearview mirror, the Pelicans returned home to host the Winston-Salem Dash looking to end the 2009 season on a high note and maybe play the role of spoiler as well.
No such luck. Winston-Salem turned three late rallies into the Pelicans' tenth straight defeat way of a 10-7 extra-innings win in front of 3,523 at BB&T Coastal Field.
The two teams traded zeroes until the bottom of the fourth inning when Myrtle Beach broke through against Dash left-hander Justin Edwards. Michael Fisher's leadoff single opened the door to a three-run frame with a two-out RBI single by Jesus Sucre followed by Adam Milligan's first home run in a Pelicans uniform, a two-run shot to left field that put the Birds up 3-0.
Following a Winston-Salem run that scored on a two-out error by Jon Mark Owings in the top of the fourth, the Pelicans added two more to their tally. Owings made up for his miscue with a leadoff double, scoring two batters later on C.J. Lee's RBI single. Lee stole second and came across on an RBI base hit by Donell Linares with two outs to put Myrtle Beach up 5-1.
It was Goose Creek, South Carolina native Justin Greene playing the role of hero for Winston-Salem while trying to will the Dash to the win. Greene crushed his first two homers of the season in a Winston-Salem uniform in the eighth and ninth, sandwiching them around an eighth-inning RBI single by Dale Mollenhauer to tie the game with his ninth-inning blast. Greene's homers sent a cadre of friends and family erupting into cheers in the third base stands.
The Pelicans were unable to muster any offense after Dash starter Justin Edwards departed, including in the bottom of the ninth against Hector Santiago (4-4). In the tenth, Winston-Salem made Myrtle Beach pay with a five-run explosion capped off by a monstrous two-run Seth Loman homer to put the Dash up 10-5. Moises Hernandez (0-2) allowed all five runs earned on five hits in the tenth sending his ERA skyrocketing to 18.69 after four appearances. The Pelicans got two off Dash reliever Nate Jones in the bottom of the tenth but couldn't close the gap.
This season-ending four-game set continues with an Inflatamaniacs appearance scheduled for Saturday night's second game. Former Major League All-Star Reggie Sanders will throw out the first pitch for Saturday's ballgame to promote his free baseball clinic coming up on Saturday, September 19 at the Ripken Baseball Experience Facility. Myrtle Beach's Cole Rohrbough (6-8, 5.73) goes against Anthony Carter (11-7, 4.45) for Winston-Salem with first pitch slated for 7:05. Tickets for all Pelicans home games are available at the BB&T Coastal Field box office, by calling (843)918-6000 or by visiting the Tickets page at MyrtleBeachPelicans.com.
