Pelicans Rally in Eighth, Snap Ten-Game Losing Streak

September 5, 2009 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Winston-Salem Dash News Release

Myrtle Beach, SC - Myrtle Beach used a three-run eighth inning to overcome a late deficit and defeat Winston-Salem 5-4 on Saturday night at BB&T Coastal Field. The victory snapped the Pelicans season-high ten-game losing streak and dropped the Dash into a first place tie with Salem in the Southern Division with two games remaining in the regular season.

Down 4-2 with newly inserted reliever Tyson Corley on the mound, Myrtle Beach's rally began when Michael Fisher singled with one out and Donell Linares doubled to put runners on second and third. Gerry Rodriguez collected an RBI ground out to bring the Pelicans within a run. Jesus Sucre drew a walk and a wild pitch moved both runners into scoring position. Adam Milligan produced a clutch two-out, two-run single to put Myrtle Beach in front 5-4.

Benino Pruneda (2-3) worked two hitless innings of relief, including a perfect ninth, to collect the win. Corley (0-1) allowed three runs in an inning of work to suffer his first Carolina League loss.

Winston-Salem grabbed an early lead when Seth Loman was hit by a pitch with the bases-loaded in the first inning. It was the 14th time Loman has been hit by a pitch, which paces the league. The Dash added a pair of runs in the fourth inning when John Curtis and Joe Persichina registered back-to-back one-out singles off Cole Rohrbough. C.J. Lang followed with a two-run double to give Winston-Salem a 3-0 lead.

The Pelicans answered in the bottom of the inning when Gerry Rodriguez launched a two-run home run off Anthony Carter to trim the Pelicans deficit to 3-2. It was Carter's league-high 21st home run allowed. It was also the lone blemish for Carter, who tossed seven innings and limited the Pelicans to two runs on seven hits. He did not walk a batter and struck out four, but did not factor in the decision.

The Dash manufactured a run in the sixth inning to take a 4-2 lead. Justin Greene led off with a walk and stole second. He advanced to third on a throwing error and scored on a wild pitch.

The Dash and Pelicans meet in game three of this four-game series on Sunday evening at BB&T Coastal Field. Winston-Salem will start RHP Jacob Rasner (4-6, 4.16), while Myrtle Beach will turn to RHP Erik Corider (6-8, 3.80). The first pitch is scheduled for 6:05 p.m.

The first-half Southern Division champion Winston-Salem Dash will host games one and two of the first round of the playoffs at Wake Forest Baseball Park on Wednesday, September 9 and Thursday, September 10. Both games are scheduled for 7 p.m. Advanced tickets are only $5 and can be purchased by calling 336-714-2287 or visiting www.wsdash.com.
