Milone Finishes Stellar Year With a Flourish
September 5, 2009 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Potomac Nationals News Release
WOODBRIDGE, Va- Though the team might be eliminated from playoff contention, the Potomac Nationals are still bashing the baseball like a team on a mission. After pounding the Kinston Indians 8-1 in Friday's opener, the Nats' bats stayed hot on Saturday, crushing three home runs en route to a 7-0 shutout of the K-Tribe.
Starting pitcher Tom Milone did not need many runs of support on Saturday night as the southpaw was on top of his game in his final outing of an outstanding 2009 campaign. Milone (12-5) picked up his league-leading 12th win of the season by tossing eight shutout innings, the second consecutive time he has not allowed a run on the hill after his seven-inning shutout performance against Kinston last Sunday.
Milone surrendered just four hits while striking out four and walked just a single batter. Those 15 scoreless innings to end the season lowered his ERA to 2.91 which is good for fourth in the league. Milone will also finish second in the league in innings pitched with 151 1/3. He needed only 79 pitches through seven innings and 92 through eight to set down an aggressive K-Tribe lineup.
But it was not just Milone on this night as the P-Nats used their thunder sticks to launch three more home runs to add to their total. Danny Espinosa got the hit parade started in the bottom of the first with his 18th home run of the season, the last two of which have both come off Indians starter Bryan Price (3-10).
Tim Pahuta blasted a towering three-run shot in the fourth inning off Price, his eighth of the season to push the P-Nat lead to 4-0. An Espinosa walk with the bases loaded in the seventh plated another runner and Devin Ivany capped off the scoring in the seventh with a two-run home run, his second in as many nights, to make the game 7-0.
Hassan Pena came out for the ninth to finish off the game as the P-Nats have taken the first two contests with the K-Tribe in the season's final regular season series.
On Sunday, you can catch the NatMobile once more at Pfitzner Stadium for the afternoon start time of 1:05 ET. Since the August 22 game against the Salem Red Sox was rained out, postponing the John Lannan Bobblehead giveaway, the date has been rescheduled for Sunday, September 6! The first 1,000 fans through the gates will receive a John Lannan Bobblehead courtesy of GEICO.
Remember fans, kids eat free on Sunday afternoons! All kids 12 and under will receive a voucher upon entering the stadium that is good for one free regular hot dog and 12oz fountain soft drink. Gates open at noon and fans can receive autographs from select P-Nats players before the game. After the final out is recorded, fans can come down to the outfield to take part in Family Toss with the P-Nats by playing a game of catch on the outfield grass. And of course, kids run the bases after the game courtesy of Glory Days Grill.
