Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release

GARY, Ind. - A six-run explosion in the eighth broke open a tie ballgame and gave the RailCats a 9-3 victory against the Lincoln Saltdogs on Tuesday night. The RailCats won three of four in the series to improve to 21-30 on the season. It was the 'Cats first series win since June 13 and they have now won four of their last five games.

With the game tied at three, David Cooper led off the eighth inning with his 11th bunt single of the season. Adam Klein bunted him over to second base and then Mike Massaro singled up the middle to give the RailCats a 4-3 edge. Ryan Babineau then pushed a perfect bunt down the first base line for a hit that scored Massaro. Brian Kolb hit into a fielder's choice to extend the lead to 6-3. With two outs and runners on the corners, newly-acquired Matt Forgatch hit a triple into deep left-center that scored Kolb and Babineau. An error by Saltdogs third baseman Jimmy Rohan brought home Forgatch to cap off a six-run inning in front of a crowd of 2,454.

Craig Maddox pulled an RBI single to right to put the RailCats ahead in the first inning. Kolb drove in another run with a fielder's choice grounder to give the 'Cats a 2-0 lead against Saltdogs starter Ricardo Estevez. Estevez received a no decision, giving up three runs in 3 1/3 innings.

RailCats starter Jon Gulbransen, a former Valparaiso pitcher signed earlier in the day, retired the first eight hitters he faced. He allowed a run in the fourth on a single by Asif Shah, and then exited the game. Gulbransen allowed one run in 3 2/3 innings for a no-decision in his first career start. David Quinowski (2-1) pitched a scoreless eighth and was credited the victory. Chris Allen shut the door in the ninth inning for his third save.

Maddox knocked in a run on a fielder's choice in the fourth to increase the RailCats advantage to 3-1. The Saltdogs answered in the top of the fifth on Mike Provencher's two-run blast to left to tie the game at three. Two of Provencher's four home runs on the season have come at U. S. Steel Yard against RailCats pitching.

David Quinowski (2-1) threw a scoreless inning of relief with two strikeouts to pick up the victory.

The RailCats are off on Wednesday and travel to Worcester, Mass. to start an 11-game road trip against Can-Am League opponents. Thursday's first pitch is at 6:05 p.m. Central Time against the Worcester Tornadoes. No starters have been announced.
