Longest Saints Homestand of Season Ends on Sour Note with 6-4 Loss in 12

ST. PAUL, MN (July 10, 2012) - The St. Paul Saints looked at their longest homestand of the season as a huge opportunity as they faced two teams with losing records. They were either tied or carried a lead into the eighth inning of all eight games, but with their 6-4 loss in 12 innings to the Sioux City Explorers on Wednesday night at Midway Stadium in front of 4,872, the Saints went just 3-5.

With the game tied at four in the top of the 12th inning Brandon Newton led off for the Explorers with a single to center. He moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Yusuke Inoguchi. After Mike Bisenius was hit by a pitch Kris Sanchez, who was 0-5 on the night up to that point, drove a double to the left field wall scoring two runs that proved to be the game winner.

The Saints offense, which entered the game last in the league in average, collected just two hits from the sixth inning until the 12th. They were held in check by the Explorers closer Chris Bodishbaugh who pitched the final 4.1 innings allowing just one hit while striking out five. Jake Krause collected one of the two hits with a triple in the sixth, but Adam Frost grounded out to end the inning. Jim Rapoport, who earlier in the game singled to extend his streak of reaching base safely to 30 games, singled with two outs in the 12th. Ole Sheldon, however, grounded out to end the game.

The Saints jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first as Rapoport, who was on first after a fielder's choice, moved to second on a single by Sheldon. The hit extended his hitting streak to a career high 11 games. Willie Cabrera followed with an RBI single.

The Explorers took a 4-1 lead in the second as Ray Serrano led off the inning with a solo homer, his seventh of the season, tying the game at one. With one out Tyler Goodro singled and Ryan Priddy moved him to third on a double. Mike Murphy gave the Explorers a 2-1 lead with a single. Newton then singled home Priddy and Jose Hernandez' throw to third to try and get Murphy went out of play allowing Murphy to score the fourth run of the inning.

The Saints made it 4-2 in the third when Ole Sheldon clubbed a solo homer, his 12th of the season and 52nd of his career leaving him three shy of surpassing David Kennedy's (1994, 97-99) franchise record of 54. The RBI was his 209th in his Saints career four shy of surpassing Brent Krause's (2007-11) franchise record.

The Saints tied the game at four in the fifth when Rapoport singled and Cabrera hit a two-run blast, his fifth of the season.

The Saints have Wednesday off and head to Shaw Park on Thursday for a four game series against the Winnipeg Goldeyes at 7:00 p.m. The game can be heard on Club 1220 KLBB.
