Grand Prairie AirHogs News Release
LAREDO, Texas - Brian Myrow hit for the cycle in his first four plate appearances on Tuesday, becoming the first Grand Prairie AirHogs player to do so, as the AirHogs scored six in the first and held on to beat the Laredo Lemurs 10-6 on Tuesday, winning their four-game series 3-1 at Uni-Trade Stadium.
After Yasustsugu Nishimoto struck out to start the game, Manny Ayala (2-4) walked Bryan Frichter on four pitches. That brought up Myrow for the first time, and he laced a triple to right-center to open the scoring. Andres Rodriguez followed with an RBI single down the leftfield line to make it 2-0, and after Greg Porter walked, Trent Lockwood smashed the first pitch he saw for a three-run home run to right to give the AirHogs (37-14) a 5-0 advantage. Two batters later, Zane Chavez unloaded on a 3-2 pitch to right for his third dinger of the season to complete the six-run first.
But the Lemurs (21-28) came right back in the first, using a leadoff error to their advantage. Nick DeBarr (9-2) then walked Jimmy Mojica before a fielder's choice out put runners at the corners. Javier Brito then doubled to put Laredo on the board, John Allen hit a sacrifice fly and Stephen Pearson and Palmer Karr had RBI singles to bring the Lemurs to within two.
The AirHogs starter got Uriak Marquez to get out of trouble that inning and got a double play to erase a hit batter in the second, but a single, a double and another error brought the Lemurs to within one.
Myrow made it a two-run lead again with his first-pitch home run leading off the fourth against Kyle Wilson, but Laredo got that run back with a two-out rally in the sixth. Marquez walked and stole second, and with the runner heading for third, Brian Peterson singled through the left side to pull the Lemurs to within one. Anthony Scelfo then singled to put runners at the corners, but after a visit from Ricky VanAsselberg, DeBarr struck out Mojica to end the inning and his night.
In the seventh, Greg Porter led off with a single and Trent Lockwood walked to start the frame against Gabriel Zavala. After Kenny Held failed to get a bunt down, Zavala threw two pitches up and in to Chavez, provoking the ire of the AirHogs' catcher. The benches briefly cleared as cooler heads prevailed, but not before crew chief Bryan Childe issued warnings to both teams. Zavala was replaced mid-count by Bradley Blanks, and Chavez hit the first pitch he threw for a two-run double to right-center. David Thomas then grounded out to move Chavez to third, and Nishimoto had an infield single off the glove of a diving Marquez at short to bring in Chavez and give the AirHogs their final margin of victory.
Griffin Bailey, Cody White and Ronnie Morales each worked a relatively calm scoreless inning to finish the game, although Morales hit Stephen Douglas with an off-speed pitch with two outs in the ninth, setting off Laredo manager Pete Incaviglia, who felt that Morales and VanAsselberg should have been ejected because of the warning. But the umpires deemed Morales' pitch to be unintentional, and also did not eject Incaviglia, who had an animated and protracted argument with Childe.
But that was to be all the excitement there was to be in the game, as Porter made a diving play at third and threw to first to get Brito to end the game and give the AirHogs their eighth straight series win.
Notes: Keanon Simon (sore hamstring) got the day off, the first time he has not played this season. As a result it was the first time anyone else has hit leadoff and the first time Nishimoto did not bat ninth.Myrow's cycle was the third of the year in the American Association, with Amarillo's Matthew Tucker doing it to Laredo on May 26 and the Sox's Tim Alberts doing it to Gary-SouthShore on June 17. Incaviglia was ejected from the game that Tucker hit for the cycle later on in that contest.Myrow picked up his first four-hit game of the year and his eighth three-hit and 16th multi-hit game of the season. The AirHogs held their former player Stephen Douglas, who set the league record for hits in a season in 2011, to an 0-for-17 in the series.DeBarr became the first pitcher in the league to nine wins.
